Declining Student Enrollment In Virginia 1972-1981 : An Examination Of Its Extent, State Board Of Education Policies, And Changes Effected By Selected School Divisions, Edward Hughes Pruden

The purposes of the study were to determine: to what extent student enrollment has declined in the state and in local school divisions in Virginia during the decade 1972-1981; what policies, if any, have been enacted by the State Board of Education relative to declining enrollment; and what effect a severely declining enrollment may have had in the areas of formal curriculum, professional personnel, and school organizational patterns and utilization of buildings.;It was found that during the decade studied: (1) statewide enrollment declined overall by less than six percent; (2) 62 percent of the divisions experienced a net loss in …

The purpose of this study was to investigate: (1) the relationship between the leadership style of an elementary school principal, as second-level manager, and the mathematics achievement of the students, and (2) the relationship between the degree of leadership style congruence of the elementary principal, as second-level manager, and the teacher, as first-level manager, and the mathematics achievement of students. The purpose of this study was to determine the quality of written job descriptions for the position of elementary assistant principal and to measure the observed role behavior, preferred role behavior, and effectiveness of assistant principals as perceived by principals, assistant principals, and teachers. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between regional accreditation status and selected achievement test scores in public elementary schools in Virginia. In this study the author translated the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' (SACS) goal of school improvement into a measurable indicator of goal achievement, achievement test scores.;The process of SACS elementary accreditation involves a considerable investment of school resources. This study investigated a method to compare the effect of verbal language disability on measures of intelligence of young handicapped children. The purpose was to discover whether differences exist in the measures of intelligence when the verbal language requirements of an intelligence test are systematically varied. The purposes of this study were (1) to gather information on advisor and advisee perceptions, (2) to gather information on advisor and advisee expectations, and (3) to analyze the satisfaction level of the participants. This research was conducted at the College of William and Mary during the 1980-1981 academic year. Questionnaires were used to survey both freshman students and their advisors.;The results indicated that in general advisees had lower perceptions of the Freshman Advising Program, had higher expectations for advising, and were less satisfied with the advising system than the advisors. The Type A behavior pattern, which has been linked to a high incidence of heart attack among adult males, has been the subject of much research by both medical and psychological professionals. There have been very few attempts to modify this damaging behavior pattern in individuals who have not shown any symptoms of heart disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of legal authority of Virginia division superintendents based upon State Constitutions and statutes between the years of 1869 and 1970. The affective meanings, defined by a semantic differential, that special educators of the mentally retarded, learning disabled and emotionally disturbed in Virginia public schools assign to their concepts of certain exceptional students, regular students, special educators, and themselves personally were explored. In addition, relationships between these affective meanings and the age, race, sex, endorsements, and experience of teachers were examined.;Mailed survey data were returned by 152 special educators from a 10% stratified random sample of Virginia public school systems. The purpose of this research was to study younger children ages seven to ten in order to determine if younger children could exceed stage two in moral development as tested by Kohlberg's Moral Judgment Interview. The purpose of this study was to develop an Exceptional Brethren Ministers Scale for the California Psychological Inventory. This scale was designed to differentiate between effective and ineffective parish pastors in the Church of the Brethren.;The procedure involved the identification of two groups of parish clergy in the Church of the Brethren. These groups were formulated using a Pastoral Effectivenes Rating Form, (PERF). The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the effects of educational treatment programs for emotionally disturbed students. In addition, the study explored whether programmatic or demographic variables interacted with the treatment programs to affect the outcome measures.;Two hundred twenty studies were integrated using the meta-analysis technique. The analysis involved more than 2,300 research subjects and yielded 235 measures of effect size, which were calculated on outcome areas of general achievement, mathematics achievement, reading achievement, and social skills. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of sixteen structured group sessions on black high school girls' attitudes toward the rights and sex roles of women, cognitions about the "ideal" woman, and expressed interests in careers in science and engineering.;The literature indicates that individuals select and enter career fields based partly upon their perceptions that certain career areas are more appropriate for one sex than for another.
