This pilot study investigated the usage of Feuerstein’s (1980) Instrumental Enrichment with underprepared college students. Open admissions policies in colleges and universities have resulted in the enrollment of many students who are underprepared to meet the academic task demands. Courses have been developed by the colleges and universities to remediate the academic deficits of underprepared students. Remedial courses using traditional educational methods have been largely ineffective. Cognitive process instruction (CPI) is an area of educational research that recently began to receive increased attention in the field of remedial education. Administrators of programs of student personnel services are being called upon to be more effective in their planning, to redefine and modify organizational structures, and to find ways to bring more control and flexibility to the budgeting process and staffing patterns. Further, student personnel administrators need to be more effective in assessing student needs, in evaluating programs, in determining problematic areas, and in providing proactive leadership within a more democratic and legalistic framework.

This report's methodology involves comparing the average local population per store for a particular business with state averages for that business to determine whether sufficient population exists to support a new business. By using this methodology, 382 prospective business opportunities have been identified out of a possible 1,416. The potential opportunities are divided into the retail , service, and construction sectors and are targeted for 12 market areas within Appalachian Kentucky.

Comparison Of Educably Mentally Retarded Students' Brigance, Piat, And Wrat Achievement Scores, Jimmy D. Lindsey

Educable mentally retarded (N=220) elementary and secondary students were administered Inventory of Basic Skills or the Inventory of Essential Skills (Brigance), The Peabody Individual Achievement Test (PIAT), and the Wide Range Achieve Test (WRAT). Results suggested that the Brigance measures do not replace the PIAT and WRAT. (CL)

Motivation, self-esteem, achievement and the development of tolerance and acceptance of others -- these are the goals that most, like Crain, et al., have come to accept as legitimate objectives of public schooling. Yet, there is substantial opinion that the public schools of Boston have been unable to achieve standards in these areas that are acceptable to the public, the students who occupy the schools, and the professionals who run them. For example, a recent survey of Boston residents' attitudes toward the schools indicates that approximately 3/4 of all respondents -- irrespective of race, or whether there were any school …

Conversion To The World View Of Alcoholics Anonymous: A Refinement Of Conversion Theory, David R. Rudy, Arthur L. Greil

Most empirical studies of the conversion process have focused on individuals who have come to espouse the world view of a deviant religious denomination or sect. Using observational data our research analyzes the conversion process by which individuals come to identify with the ideology propounded by Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.). A.A. provides prospective "alcoholics" with both a solution to drinking problems and an overarching world view with which to reinterpret their past experience. The A.A. conversion process can be divided into six phases: hitting bottom, first stepping, making a commitment, accepting your problem, telling your story, and doing Twelfth Step work. …

This distributional study of the aquatic macroinvertebrates of the Big Sandy River Basin was based on a review of published literatu re and utilized other professional sources. Data generated include 493 taxa of aquatic macroinvertebrates from the Big Sandy River and its tributaries and from adjacent drainages within the counties of the Big Sandy River Basin. Taxa represented in the study, including the 360 taxa occurring within the Levisa Fork Drainage, are generally distributed fauna in the eastern United States and none of t hese representatives are considered as rare, th reatened or endangered.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the guidance and counseling program of the Bishop David Memorial High School. Methods and procedures included the use of the Evaluative Criteria utilized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in evaluating secondary schools, an analysis of the needs of students, a review of guidance information reported on a Supplementary Data Form, and a review of guidance practices reported in literature.
