Teaching For Affective Learning, Gary E. Downs
Teaching For Affective Learning, Gary E. Downs
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
During the last ten years, many innovations have been aimed at reconstructing science education from kindergarten through high school. These efforts have produced more up- to-date information which was supposed to reflect more nearly the scientific enterprise as it is today. Gallagher (1971) contends that the course-content improvement projects have failed to show this, and they have failed to show that science is a significant cultural force.

Environmental Education: No Passing Fad, Frederick P. Deluca
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Environmental education has received increased attention during the past four years. Most of the fifty states have formulated or are in the process of formulating a state plan for environmental education. Elementary and secondary school curricula continue to reflect increased concern and activity in environmental education. Higher education has responded with modification of traditional courses, design and implementation of new courses, and at some institutions, new degree programs in environmental studies. Interest has not been restricted to the physical and biological sciences; people in social sciences and humanities on all levels have participated and in many instances have been at …

Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross
Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
"Individualized instruction? — I tried it and it didn't work!" This is the statement that is frequently heard at professional meetings and in visiting with teachers. Upon further examination, it is usually found that the individuals making the statement only tried an individualized approach for a very short period of time. The frustrations they had experienced were usually that l) most kids sat around doing nothing, 2) it was impossible to manage the paperwork in keeping track of where each student was, and 3) the time required to develop individualized units and materials just wasn't worth the reward in terms …

Iowa Science Teachers Journal
This document is a position statement, together with recommendations, from the National Science Teachers Association relative to educational programs and budgets of the National Science Foundation, particularly at pre-college levels. It is the result of noting with great concern what seems to us to be a serious, threatening decrease in financial support for such educational programs over the past three years, coupled with our firm belief that more and better science education -- not less, either in quantity or quality -- is an imperative for all children and youth in these days of growing concern about societal problems and national …

Some Criteria For Open Evaluation, John T. Wilson
Some Criteria For Open Evaluation, John T. Wilson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Most teachers have felt a faster heart beat at one time or another when their principal enters the room to "observe them teach." Both know that an evaluation report will soon be written and distributed to the district office, eventually finding its way to the board of education. The report may even affect the employment status of the teacher. The reaction of the teacher would seem to indicate "mistrust" of the evaluation. In fact, since 1965, there has been a growing mistrust of evaluation. Why? Specifically, why do teachers mistrust evaluation to the degree that they avoid it in their …
