The Effects Of Group Bibliocounseling On Selected Fourth-Grade Students Who Are Underachieving In Reading, Norman Anthony King

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

PURPOSE: The study was designed to test the effectiveness of group counseling utilizing books as an adjunct, bibliocounseling, on fourth-grade Caucasian boys who were underachieving in reading. Null hypotheses stated that group bibliocounseling would not have a statistically significant effect upon: ( 1) reading comprehension, (2) vocabulary, (3) reading attitude, and (4) reading self-concept.

Substantial numbers of children from low-income areas do not learn to read sufficiently well to enjoy success in school. There is no published empirical evidence regarding the use of programed tutoring in reading at the second grade level. The impact of programed tutoring on the reading achievement of second grade children must be demonstrated and not inferred from research at the first grade level. This is true, not only in terms of criterion referenced instruments related to the tutoring materials, but in terms of normative referenced instruments designed to sample reading skills. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to survey ·learning disability students and students in special day classes and to compare them on select characteristics to each other and to children attending regular day classes.

VARIABLES: The selected variables. for this study were creativity, locus of control, and academic achievement. The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effects of two different group counseling techniques on the academic achievement and self-concept of elementary school Mexican-American pupils. It was the purpose of this research project to develop a method which could be used by college and university personnel to obtain students' perceptions of and convictions concerning advising programs on their campuses. It was the purpose of this study to develop a proposed policy for in-service education of teachers in larger unified school districts in California.

The specific purposes of this study were (1) to report the nature and scope of written, in-service education policies of California school districts, (2) to report the nature and scope of employee training policies of the State of California and of the United States government, (3) to summarize in-service education policy changes recommended in the literature, and (4) to develop a proposed policy for in-service education of teachers in larger unified school districts in California.
