A warning against some dangers, tendencies that can erode the quality and meaning of education. First, the danger of undue emphasis on science and technology. A second danger is in the rapidly growing impersonalism of higher education. A third is the danger of missing the real, though more intangible point - the development of taste, of judgment, of sensitivity. It is not enough to be free. The Potting Shed tells the story of a man who returns home to his estranged family as his father is dying. Unsure why he was estranged from his family, he pursues answers his family will not provide. He realizes the answer is found in his blank memory about an event in a potting shed when he was fourteen.
