September, 1960 was the month which heralded the beginning of a new look in science programs in Davenport. PSSC Physics was introduced in one of our high schools, a city-wide elementary science committee began to look seriously at the K-6 science program, and the instruction time for seventh and eighth grade science classes was doubled.

A portion of the membership dues paid by each member of the Iowa Academy of Science to the American Association for the Advancement of Science is returned to the Iowa Academy of Science. The AAAS prefers that this money be used to finance worthy scientific research directed by high school teachers, with high school student participation where appropriate.

The Board of Directors of ISTA has recently clarified a point concerning membership. There have been several teachers who are present members of the Iowa Academy of Science. The five dollar membership charge for ISTA membership includes a two dollar charge for full membership in the Iowa Academy of Science.

Science education must advance with the times. Methods and ideas must change. We, as teachers, are being closely scrutinized. We can no longer sit back complacently. Since Sputnik, there has been grave concern over the ability of our students to apply knowledge to practical problems. Students are naturally curious so we must develop their inquiring minds and instill in them habits of sound reasoning, accurate judgment, and careful evaluation. To live in our democracy of the twentieth century the students must be trained to develop their powers of critical thinking.

With the advent of the superb Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS), Physical Sciences Study Committee (PSSC), Chemical Education Material Study (CHEM Study), and the Chemical Bond Approach (CBA) courses, secondary science teachers, at last, spend more of their efforts teaching instead of hacking up mediocre, out-dated texts and scrambling for up-to-date "supplementary" material that should have been the meat of the original "text".
