Living Material In The Laboratory, O. R. Clark Dec 1929

Living Material In The Laboratory, O. R. Clark

Science Bulletin

Living plants and animals serve as valuable aids in stimulating interest in the biology course and, during that part of the year when field trips are impossible, provide material for the study of habits and the relation of organisms to their environment. Laboratory conditions are of course artificial but they should be made as nearly natural as it is possible to make them.

The Air We Breathe, S. F. Hersey Dec 1929

The Air We Breathe, S. F. Hersey

Science Bulletin

In an examination of recent texts in general science one is impressed by the place given to a discussion and study of air in its various phases and applications. The expression "air minded" does not apply in this connection, but perhaps it holds true that a great amount of interest is always developed in pupils whenever we introduce the subject.

Teaching The History Of Science Dec 1929

Teaching The History Of Science

Science Bulletin

Science has contributed more to our comfort, well being, and happiness than any other branch of knowledge. The other branches of knowledge are now taking the scientific method for the solving of their problems. Is it not important that science teachers should find some place in their teaching to teach some of the history of the development of science?

A Classified Bibliography Of References For General Agriculture, Winfield Scott Dec 1929

A Classified Bibliography Of References For General Agriculture, Winfield Scott

Science Bulletin

Most teachers are exceedingly busy with their regular duties in the school. This leaves but little time to look up references or for that matter to plan the work once the school year has begun. Their success is largely determined by the preparation which has been made before the school year opens. The following references have been prepared for these busy teachers who would like to enrich their courses in agriculture, but who do not have time to study or select references.

Exhibits As An Aid In Teaching, O. B. Read Dec 1929

Exhibits As An Aid In Teaching, O. B. Read

Science Bulletin

Complaint is often made that science subjects are difficult to teach. Many feel they are so abstract that there is nothing tangible with which to start. Since most of our industrial products are now very closely controlled by physical principles and chemical processes, it ought not to be difficult in the study of these subjects to arouse interest by calling attention to their uses in the industrial process.

Heat, L. Begeman Nov 1929

Heat, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

The subject of heat as discussed in most texts in general science involves only the most elementary concepts as regards its theory. As a rule the following topics are the leading ones: - sources of heat, thermometry, methods of heat transmission, effect of heat, and a number of the common everyday practical applications of heat.

Science Minded, Harold E. Murphy Nov 1929

Science Minded, Harold E. Murphy

Science Bulletin

When we are trying to be "air minded " and "peace minded" why not go a little further and be 'science minded"? The aeronautic field has as its champion, Colonel Lindberg; the Peace Federation has as its champion, Ishbell McDonald; but where is the youthful champion of the field of chemical science? In this day of scientific advancement, a champion is surely needed to bring t h e achievement of chemical science to the people. Someone has said, "Science is the Creator's chest of tools. Human progress is man's learning to use these tools."

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott Nov 1929

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

Biologically speaking, insects may be called a highly successful group, and much of this success is due to their adaptability to the conditions of their environment. They are found everywhere, and eat almost everything. All of the large groups of insects are world-wide in their distribution, though the most widely distributed are the beetles.

The Simple Machines, L. Begeman Nov 1929

The Simple Machines, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

With reference to a pulley system, the work equation is clearly discerned in its practical operation. In presenting the pulley, the writer uses a rectangular frame about two feet high and three feet wide. A number of hooks are screwed into the top cross piece of the frame. With such a device a number of different pulley combinations can be shown at one time.

Our Weather, E. J. Cable Oct 1929

Our Weather, E. J. Cable

Science Bulletin

There is probably no subject which so fully occupies our attention or is of more significance to us than is the weather. It is also probably true that there is no subject about which the average individua l knows less. Superstition and ignorance run riot in the minds of those who know little about the cause of our weather. To the end that a little light may be shed in darkened minds where superstition plays havoc, the writer ventures this short article. The suggestion may give the teacher of general science a new urge to carry on along this line …

The Simple Machines, L. Begeman Oct 1929

The Simple Machines, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

In the discussion of simple machines it is best to begin with the lever and the wheel and axle. Both of these simple machines give us a practical illustration of the principle of moments. The lever is the simpler and clearer illustration and usually presents little difficulty to a student body. The wheel and axle is a device which can be considered to be a continuously acting lever in which the radius of the wheel is the force or effort arm and the radius of the axle is the resistance arm.

There are many fallacies concerning nature that are commonly believed by many people. It is the duty of science to correct these fallacies and superstitions. Below are listed a few very common ones.

Mechanics Of Solids, L. Begeman Sep 1929

Mechanics Of Solids, L. Begeman

Science Bulletin

According to the traditional arrangement of subject matter in textbooks on high school physics, it is customary to introduce the treatment of mechanics of so-lids by beginning with the subject of motion, force, and Newton's laws of motion. This at once leads the immature student into a labyrinth of abstract conceptions that is generally disheartening. It would show better judgment on the part of the teacher to begin the subject of mechanics with material that is more concrete to the student and which is continually before him in his environment.

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott Sep 1929

Insects And Man, Roy L. Abbott

Science Bulletin

Mrs. Jiggs, in the cartoon, "Bringing up Father," frequently calls her husband an insect. This is a flagrant misuse of the term as an insect never has fewer nor more than six legs. It may be wingless as are the bedbugs, two winged as are all flies, or four winged as the grasshoppers, but no normal insect ever has more or less than six legs and by this one positive character you may know them.
