This study focused on the needs of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students who have I.Q. scores of roughly 75-95. These students often function two or more years below grade level in school and are referred to as Marginally Learning Disabled (MLD), or slow learners. Factors which contribute to the existence of this situation were discussed as were problems of accurate identification. It was found that most school districts do not provide special help for these students. MLD students are usually placed in the regular classroom. needed to locate them and put them to work is not readily accessible to the majority of early childhood teachers. This study identifies and evaluates sources of information on microcomputer software and provides a partial listing of appropriate software which is ava1lable, along with partial listings ot courseware publishers and publications carrying information on
m1crocomputer software. Criteria tor self-evaluation of courseware are suggested and recommendations are made tor insuring accessibility of resources to teachers within a school system.

The Educational Effects Of And The Relationship Between Nonpromotion And The Dropout Rate, Sharon Slaughter Summers

The decision not to promote a student is a critical one; it could affect the rest of the student's academic career. It is imperative that such a decision be based on the best available research. This study reviews research that has been done on nonpromotion, dropouts, and the relationship between the two. Results from an examination of 1,024 dropouts' records show that 87.8% of dropouts had experienced nonpromotion one or more times. Recommendations for developing retention criteria and preventing dropouts are listed.

The purpose of this study was to find out if practicing primary teachers use nonverbal communication (NVC) effectively in class management. Eighty University of North Florida graduate students who had taught Kindergarten, first, second or third grade were surveyed during the Summer 1985 Term with a self-reporting questionnaire developed as part of this project. It was found that the majority of these teachers reported that they usually use NYC in their classrooms. A Comparison Of Sat Scores Of The Lep Elementary School Students In Duval County, Kathryn Llewellyn Branch

The hypothesis that there is no significant difference between the mean SAT Total Reading Battery percentile scores of LEP students who are mainstreamed and those who are self-contained, was studied. Sixty-eight fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade LEP students were administered the SAT. They were divided into two groups. The self-contained group consisted of 35 students; the mainstreamed group consisted of 33 students. The mean percentile score for the mainstreamed group was 39.57 with a standard deviation of 21.02. For the self-contained group, the mean was 26.0 and the standard deviation was 18.53. The computed t = 2.67, P < .05. The null hypothesis was rejected.

A comparison between the traditional American playground with the adventure playground clearly shows the superiority of the latter in meeting the play needs of children. This study explores the history and characteristics of both types of playgrounds. Research also focuses on children's play needs and how playground design affects these needs. Adventure playgrounds as public school playgrounds offer a wider range of play experiences than can the traditional school playground and can enhance academic learning. Inservice training for educators can facilitate an understanding of the concept of the adventure playground and the teacher's role as play leader. Enlisting community support …

The purpose of this study is to show that instructional methods designed for right-brained students will make a significant difference in the reading achievement scores of the students when compared with the scores of right-brained sixth grade students not receiving these instructional methods.
The subjects were sixth grade students who use the right hemisphere of the brain to a greater degree than the left hemisphere. The subjects' cerebral preference was determined by a test known as the Cerebral Preference Index (CPI). Ten students each were chosen from two sixth grade classes. This study was developed for the teacher who may have limited resources in music education. The purpose of this study was to design a curriculum in music education for the intermediate grades so that a non-music major teacher could easily instruct music lessons. The characteristics of musical growth have been outlined and research has been shown to support the musical characteristics. A set of objectives has been formed as the foundation for teaching music to children of the intermediate grades. Text specific reading/learning strategies that reflect recent theoretical research in the reading process were incorporated into the 10th grade world history curriculum. These methods were intended to afford success for a specific group of students who had a history of failure and so lead those students toward independent reading and learning. They were also intended to motivate the world history teachers to use procedures that are congruent with the findings of research in reading and learning.
