An Analysis Of The Antecedents Of Successful Progress Toward Graduation By Student Athletes At Iowa State University , Roger Vike Hansen Jan 1993

An Analysis Of The Antecedents Of Successful Progress Toward Graduation By Student Athletes At Iowa State University , Roger Vike Hansen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The publicity surrounding the low graduation rate of some collegiate student athletes has resulted in a number of studies attempting to discover significant predictors of student athlete graduation. Previous studies have relied upon relationships developed from zero-order correlation and multiple regression on a single dependent variable; either a dichotomously scored variable reflecting whether or not the student athlete graduated or cumulative grade point average (GPA). Too often, by the time the independent variables have manifested themselves, it was too late for the student athlete to successfully complete the academic requirements for graduation; This study hypothesized that (1) academic success consisted ...

Predicting Educational And Occupational Attainment Among Male And Female Teacher Education Students: An Examination Of High School Extracurricular Participation And Other Selected Characteristics , Alyce Ann Holland

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The current study had two components: Study 1 and Study 2. The purpose of Study 1 was to examine variables that predict graduation from the Iowa State University Teacher Education Program among 2,008 prospective teacher education students who were enrolled in a beginning education course. The analyses were conducted separately for male and female students;College grade point average when enrolled in a beginning education course was the strongest predictor of graduation in teacher education for both male and female students. For females, the three best predictors of graduation in teacher education following college grades, were participation in teacher ...

Validating Measures Of Theoretical Constructs Useful In Examining College Persistence , Margaret Anna O'Toole Healy Jan 1983

Validating Measures Of Theoretical Constructs Useful In Examining College Persistence , Margaret Anna O'Toole Healy

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examined persistence in college using the model proposed by Spady (1970) and modified by Tinto (1975) in which students must be adequately regulated by the institution's values and goals in order to achieve goal commitment and must be adequately integrated into the social system of the institution in order to achieve institutional commitment. The purpose of this study was to develop reliable measures of the concepts, goal commitment and institutional commitment, and to validate them in terms of whether or not they are useful in identifying direct-from-high-school students who will or will not satisfactorily persist from the ...
