Development Of K-12 Science Handbook For The Thorp School District, Sim Egbert

A handbook was created for the Thorp School District to provide teachers with science goals and objectives for each grade level. A science philosophy, a sample evaluation sheet, elementary science scope and sequence, a list of current textbooks, and the sequences of science classes were also presented in the handbook. Curriculum guides from several districts were studied before the goals and objectives were written for the handbook. The research on the needs of a curriculum and the past and current trends in science curriculum was reviewed. The literature regarding science curriculum supported the development of the handbook. Recommendations were proposed.

This project served to develop a teacher manual for teachers of adults at the Bellingham Vocational Technical Institute in Bellingham, Washington. The project was designed to assist in staff development by (1) informing vocational instructors of state and school policies and procedures, (2) identifying new and updated teaching guidelines, and (3) by assisting in orienting new staff to school and vocational education procedures. A handbook was designed to be used by parents of Specific Learning Disability (SLD) children in the Moses Lake School District. Using material from the literature and questions from parents of SLD children as a guide, advice and recommended activities were developed for the handbook. Parents were enthusiastic about the activities and indicated a desire for more information. It was concluded that parents using the handbook could be more effective in helping their SLD child.

The problems encountered by gifted students when integrating into the regular self-contained classroom were studied. Parents and peers display their misunderstanding of gifted students by their innocent remarks that adversely affect them. Teachers unwittingly cause discomfort by the unchallenging tasks gifted children are expected to perform. Sixty children from the Wenatchee School District's Gifted Pull-out Program were asked to share some of their concerns pertaining to these problems. Based upon their responses and a survey of the literature, a handbook was compiled to help prevent parents, teachers and peers from misunderstanding the gifted student.
