A mobile camp for the mildly/moderately mentally retarded was designed to provide first-hand experience in the essentials of obtaining food, shelter, and social skills of cohabitation along with their interdependency with flora, fauna, and the topographical environment. The camp design consists of 10 days of camping in tents and staying in motels. The campers travel by bus along the Washington coast, Puget Sound, and San Juan Islands. Areas of academic instruction include plants and animals along the route.

This study presented a review of the philosophy and history of school camping, the evolution of the outdoor education program at the College Elementary School, and a study of four fifth grade children before, during, and after their first school camping experience. Interviews, observations, written tests, sociograms, examination of records, and standard camp evaluations were utilized.

The purpose of this thesis is to develop a blueprint for a school camping program in California based on academic, recreational and social objectives, and develping these objectives through a "real-life" situation. In order that this blueprint be founded on sound camping principles a brief history of the camping movement will be presented showing the gradual evolution from early, crude, militaristic types to the present day camp with modern educational philosophy.
