Perceptions Of Important Personal And Leadership Characteristics For Newly Hired Principals To Be Successful School Leaders: Views Of School Superintendents, William C. Rolón

Education Doctoral

Research has shown that a strong relationship prevails between principals’ leadership characteristics, student engagement, teacher efficacy, and parental involvement toward responding to the demands of school accountability (Maxwell, Huggins, and Scheurich, 2010). Superintendents across the country are reporting the increasing difficulty of getting adept administrators (Cruzeiro and Boone, 2009). Superintendents who are primarily the ones responsible for the hiring of principals must be able to identify and assess the principal applicants as to their suitability and effectiveness as an administrator to meet the accountability and performance demands (Estes, 2011). This study sought to identify superintendents’ perceptions of the important personal …

Whom Do I Trust? Measuring Principals’ Trust In Major Stakeholders Correlated To Leadership Behaviors In High Poverty Middle Schools, Liza Ortiz Aug 2017

Whom Do I Trust? Measuring Principals’ Trust In Major Stakeholders Correlated To Leadership Behaviors In High Poverty Middle Schools, Liza Ortiz

Education Doctoral

A growing body of research has examined relational trust in schools and its impact on school climate and student achievement. Trust is a complex concept. It has many layers such as benevolence, openness, reliability, competence, and honesty (Hoy & Tschannen-Moran, 1999). Principals who display collegial and supportive behaviors generate a high level of trust whereas principals who display restrictive and directive behaviors generate low levels of trust (Goddard, Tschannen-Moran, & Hoy, 2001). Principals are vital stakeholders in a school community. This is especially true for principals who serve high poverty schools where the challenges are unique and daunting. Despite the …

Is Complementary And Alternative Medicine Effective In Reducing Self-Reported Anxiety Symptoms In College Students?, Hollie M. Hall

Education Doctoral

Anxiety is the number one health issue college students seek help for on campus (Grasgreen, 2011). An estimated 62% of college students did not continue their studies due to suffering from anxiety (Lindsey, 2014). Psychotherapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and psychotropic medications have been used for many years to treat anxiety. CBT and medication have been found to be effective treatment strategies when individuals are compliant with treatment; however, both strategies require access to a trained professional and can become a financial burden. Therefore, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a potential effective treatment strategy for anxiety, which …

The current representation of women as heads of schools in accredited National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) schools is significantly less than that of men. Further, the percentage of women in these top positions remains far below their representation in the profession of teaching. This phenomenological study examined the perspectives of female administrators from the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) on the underrepresentation of women as heads of school in independent schools. This qualitative study was framed through social role theory (Eagly & Wood, 1988), and was guided by three research questions: What supports and/or constraints do women in …

K-2 Teacher Perception Of Anxiety, Beth Kramer Aug 2017

K-2 Teacher Perception Of Anxiety, Beth Kramer

Education Doctoral

Research has indicated that anxiety adversely affects learning. Schools charged with student learning and achievement need to address anxiety. However, determining the efficacy of anxiety prevention programs or strategies may be problematic. School leaders that wish to address anxiety with students will have difficulty in finding an anxiety prevention program or strategies that are evidence-based. This places a burden on school leaders’ decisions regarding the allocation of additional resources to implement such services. The purpose of the current study is to examine the perceptions of K-2 school teachers’ perceptions on school anxiety in the children they serve. Information obtained from …
