Prior studies have shown differing opinions on whether factors such as the makeup of the family or the level of a parent's education have an effect on academic achievement of a student. This study looks at students at a small K-8 inner city school in Minneapolis to see exactly what aspects of parenting indeed have an effect on a student's academic achievement. Through the use of qualitative research it was found that high levels of parent-teacher communication and high expectations for both level of education and performance in school give the student the best chance of experiencing academic success. Research indicates students with emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD) struggle with their transition from high school onward. Students who once received services, now on their own, are left poorly equipped for success. Studies show these students often have low rates of participation in post-secondary schooling, high rates of unemployment, and high rates of incarceration or involvement in crime. Though studies show these young adults struggle after high school, very programs have been implemented to improve their chances for success. To investigate the existence of effective instructional strategies that would meet the learning needs of individual students as well as influence existing perceptions of locus of control, a research review and discussion are presented which discuss the potential benefits and drawbacks of the methodology known as procedural choice. Inconclusive data and no readily identifiable examples of application resulted in the utilization of current research findings to develop a curriculum containing procedural choice based instructional strategies, designed to serve as both a potential measurement tool for future research as well as a practical, readily applicable curriculum for classroom use. The purpose of this study is to examine ways to best prepare students in an art curriculum at a high school level who wish to go on to pursue a career as a professional artist or designer. In this study I have interviewed eleven professional artists and designers. I asked them a series of questions regarding the types of subjects that, based upon their experience, they would recommend be taught at that level. I have also asked them to identify those things that they feel teachers could do to encourage students to consider art or design as a career.

This study was created to determine if students at the middle school level would exhibit an increase in quarter grades in the areas of reading and mathematics throughout the year if they received mentoring from school personnel. In addition to student grades, attendance and behavior referrals throughout the year were also examined. This study involved fifty-two students in the study group and sixty-six students in the control group, all of whom attended the same public middle school in southeast Minnesota.
