As studied in recent years, there is a growing number of minority students who are enrolled in special education around the country. In many schools, the percentage of minority students in special education compared to the total number of minority students is surprisingly high. The purpose of this study was to determine if this was true for schools in the Rochester, New York region. This capstone focuses on respect within schools in the inner city. The literature review focused on emotional behavioral disorders and poverty, mainly whether or not the two are linked together. To find the presence of respect in the inner city schools, teachers and students were asked fill out a questionnaire giving their opinions on what respect is, giving and receiving of respect and whether or not respect is given at home. Ultimately, it was proven that the definition of respect between teachers and students is very different, thus resulting in a conflict that plays out in the classroom.

This research focuses on students with disabilities and their transition and career planning for postsecondary life. The United States federal government has put into law, regulations and guidelines for children with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requires states and school districts to have a transition plan in place for all students with disabilities. The transition plan should prepare students for further education, employment, and independent living. Transition plans need to take into account the individual student’s interest and abilities. I focused on literature about Response to Intervention in regards to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004, how Response to Intervention works as an academic model, and what a culturally responsive RTI program would look like. Research was conducted to determine what strategies were most effective for teaching students with Asperger’s Syndrome. After reviewing the literature ten strategies were chosen because they came up the most often. These ten strategies were researched in detail and were found to be the most effective when teaching students with Asperger’s Syndrome. A study was then conducted to determine if teachers were actually using the strategies recommended by the literature. The results of the study found that the participants did use a variety of the ten teaching strategies found to be most effective in the research.

Self-harm and self-injurious behavior is a widespread problem among female adolescents. Self-injurious behaviors are a dangerous coping strategy used by many female adolescents who lack in the primary needs for managing feelings and coping mechanisms. Although several of these adolescents share an association with diagnoses of traumatic childhood experiences, major depression, alcohol/drug use/abuse, and/or other recognized mental illnesses, the act of self-harm or self-injurious behaviors is not recognized as an isolated mental disorder by the 4th Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The Workplace Covenant ™ is a team-building tool designed to increase trust and commitment among all members of a work group, including the work group manager. The supervisory group of the Operator Services Department at Frontier Communications Corporation along with their manager was assessed to measure current levels of job satisfaction, workplace engagement, team communications, interpersonal relations, and performance. A consultant performed the Workplace Covenant ™ team building intervention with the work group. Then, a final team assessment measured the success of the intervention.

My literature review portion of this project discussed the history of mainstreaming, in addition to its advantages and disadvantages. It also talked about the social effects of mainstreaming and the impact teachers' attitudes have on its success. In addition, it discussed a number of effective mainstreaming strategies along with current practices of inclusion. The study I conducted for this project focused on one participant who is integrated into a general education setting from his special education setting. I observed and recorded the participant's on-task behavior, along with his social and academic interactions in both settings.

Recent studies have shown varying results as to whether this type of program is successful for these students.
