Overrepresentation Of Minority Students Enrolled In Special Education, Katie Bower

Education Masters

As studied in recent years, there is a growing number of minority students who are enrolled in special education around the country. In many schools, the percentage of minority students in special education compared to the total number of minority students is surprisingly high. The purpose of this study was to determine if this was true for schools in the Rochester, New York region. As a teacher, I wanted to learn more about why the high percentage of minority students in special education existed so that I can better serve the students that I work with. If we know why …

Respect In Inner City Schools, Nicole Baccanti

Education Masters

This capstone focuses on respect within schools in the inner city. The literature review focused on emotional behavioral disorders and poverty, mainly whether or not the two are linked together. To find the presence of respect in the inner city schools, teachers and students were asked fill out a questionnaire giving their opinions on what respect is, giving and receiving of respect and whether or not respect is given at home. Applied Behavior Analysis And Autism-Spectrum Disorders, Stephanie Kacurovski May 2009

Applied Behavior Analysis And Autism-Spectrum Disorders, Stephanie Kacurovski

Education Masters

The purpose of my research was to inform others about the facts of applied behavior analysis. Before researching ABA, I had a basic understanding, or I should say misunderstanding, of the use and practice of this treatment. Unfortunately, the mis-practice of ABA contributes to many myths about the treatment. Throughout this paper, the reader should have developed an understanding of applied behavior analysis and how it is used to treat those with ASD.

Do Students With Disabilities Successfully Transition Into The Work Force Or Postsecondary Education?, Kathleen M. Philbin

Education Masters

This research focuses on students with disabilities and their transition and career planning for postsecondary life. The United States federal government has put into law, regulations and guidelines for children with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) requires states and school districts to have a transition plan in place for all students with disabilities. The transition plan should prepare students for further education, employment, and independent living. Transition plans need to take into account the individual student’s interest and abilities. Educators are in agreement that children with disabilities need to have a transition plan. Educators often have different ideas …

Self-Harm And Self-Injurious Behaviors In Female Adolescents: A Silent Epidemic, A Review In Literature, Tess Dancause

Education Masters

Self-harm and self-injurious behavior is a widespread problem among female adolescents. Self-injurious behaviors are a dangerous coping strategy used by many female adolescents who lack in the primary needs for managing feelings and coping mechanisms. Although several of these adolescents share an association with diagnoses of traumatic childhood experiences, major depression, alcohol/drug use/abuse, and/or other recognized mental illnesses, the act of self-harm or self-injurious behaviors is not recognized as an isolated mental disorder by the 4th Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Thus, self-harm or self-injurious behaviors continue to remain a problem that is often a …

Is Inclusion Effective?, Allison Murray

Education Masters

Most school districts today are inclusive schools, which means students with mild to moderate disabilities are participating in general education curriculum. Recent studies have shown varying results as to whether this type of program is successful for these students. A survey was conducted in a small rural school district and seems to support the current research indicating the correlation between the training received and the willingness of teachers to educate students that have disabilities.

Promoting Self-Determination For Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, David J. Landers Jan 2009

Promoting Self-Determination For Students With Emotional And Behavioral Disorders, David J. Landers

Education Masters

Students with emotional disturbance (ED) oftentimes feel as though their ideas and opinions are ignored or not taken seriously. Unfortunately, they are often justified in feeling this way. As ED students have some of the highest dropout rates in the United States, it should be our goal as educators to do whatever is necessary to keep them in school and help them to succeed. Using these students' naturally strong will seems the best method of doing this. Allowing them to have some power over their own education may help to assuage their feeling of powerlessness. Yet how do we promote …

The Questions And Answers In The Correlation Of Socioeconomic Status And Education, Jennifer Horton Jan 2009

The Questions And Answers In The Correlation Of Socioeconomic Status And Education, Jennifer Horton

Education Masters

There are a large amount of diverse factors that contribute to a student's academic success. Things such as basic needs, a student's culture, the teacher's culture, parent involvement, school and classroom environment, and actual instructional strategies all play a role in a student's daily academic experience. When students are living in an area of poverty, or come from families of a low socio-economic status, one or all of these factors can become compromised. As a result teachers, parents, administrators and community leaders are faced with the challenge of providing a holistic approach to education with limited resources. many times these …

Citizenship In The Inclusive Environment, Katie Girvin

Education Masters

The purpose of this study was to investigate the strategies used by educators to initiate equal opportunity for students with disabilities in the social environment known as the inclusive setting. This study also showed how children develop an understanding of what it means to have citizenship in the classroom, and how this stance is reached through the aid of peers and teachers. To be a citizen in the classroom is defined by Mara Sapon-Shevin as a naturalized individual who is entitled to the rights and privileges as any other student (2003). Having these rights and privileges encourages any student to …

Co-Teaching In Today's Schools, Carolyn Colombo

Education Masters

Co-teaching in today's schools varies based on the model that schools choose and the teachers providing the support. This literature review examined the wide variety of co-teaching models and established that co-teaching is most effective when the co-teachers share a similar philosophy and are well prepared through efficient planning. It is also necessary for the classroom size to be small enough for teachers to be able to meet with students individually or in small groups. This research focused on how co-teachers view their arrangement and how it has been implemented in the schools in which they teach. Surveys were anonymously …

The Achievement Gap, Amy C. Ciaccia

Education Masters

My research topic is "The awareness and Utilization of special education services from an urban vs. suburban perspective and the affect it has on the success rate of students with special needs." What I needed to consider when researching was the factors that can and do contribute to "differences" in the rate of success between all learners, especially in schools and districts that are perceived by many to be "unequal." I do not think it is uncommon of anyone to think that schools in the suburbs are "better" than schools in the city; whether it is in reference to the …
