The Test Of English As A Foreign Language Sample Test As A Measure Of Adolescent Language Ability, Paul Gardiner Osborn
The Test Of English As A Foreign Language Sample Test As A Measure Of Adolescent Language Ability, Paul Gardiner Osborn
Theses and Dissertations
Relative performance on the Test of English as a Foreign Language Sample Test (TOEFL-ST) was explored in sixty native English speaking high school students. Subjects also were administered the Fullerton Language Test for Adolescents and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test Revised. The TOEFL-ST was not difficult for this population, indicating that TOEFL tests taken by foreign speaking college students probably assess a level of native English competency well below the high school level. The three tests, including subtests, appear to measure a wide array of subdomains of language competency. The data do not support the conclusion that any of these …

Using Newspapers In The Junior High Classroom To Enhance The Development Of Citizenship, James J. Langen
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to design a curriculum utilizing newspapers as a primary learning resource to establish newspaper reading habits among junior high students. Research suggested a strong correlation between consistent reading of the daily newspaper and political knowledge, voting, and other acts reflecting good citizenship. Use of the newspaper in the classroom helped to establish newspaper reading habits among adolescents. This resulted in students being more aware of the adult world they would enter and more confident. They understood how their society functioned. With increased mastery of newspapers, came increased self-esteem, since newspapers were seen as an …

Personality Type And Question Preference Of College Level Students, Sheryl L. Mcglamery
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The impact of personality type on question preference is an area of new endeavor. It is the purpose of this study to determine if a relationship exists between the Sensing and Intuiting dimensions of personality as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the questioning preference of students. A Chi Square analysis of the data revealed a trend. Frequency distributions were used to determine the direction of the trend. Both the Sensing and the Intuiting subjects showed a tendency to follow type with regard to question preference. In other words those subjects showing a Sensing preference on the MBTI …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Compressed Heuristics Instruction On Problem Solving In Mathematics, James Murray Dunlop
An Investigation Of The Effects Of Compressed Heuristics Instruction On Problem Solving In Mathematics, James Murray Dunlop
UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that heuristics instruction for certain strategies and skills used in the solution of non-routine mathematical problems would have on problem solving behavior. It was conjectured that subjects given compressed but explicit instruction in problem solving strategies would exhibit higher achievement than subjects who did not receive such explicit instruction. Subjects were elementary education student volunteers from the University of North Florida. They were randomly assigned to experimental and control groups for instruction. A pretest and a posttest were administered to collect the data to evaluate this experimental design. The null …

The Relationship Between Family-Environmental Processes And Academic Achievement Among Three Hispanic Groups In The United States, Manuel Martinez-Pons
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine (1) whether differences in academic achievement exist among students of three Hispanic groups in the United States, (2) whether such differences are related to student achievement processes, and (3) whether differences in both student academic achievement and achievement processes are related to their parents' background characteristics.
The three Hispanic groups of students that were studied were Puerto Rican, Cuban, and Central/South American. Two student achievement processes were examined: their time spent on homework and their educational-occupational aspirations. The three parental achievement processes investigated were their press for English, press for independence and …

A Model For Determining Attitudes Towards School District Reorganization, James A. Voyles
Masters Theses
The focus of this study is to provide a model for determining current attitudes toward school district reorganization so that a school board can gain local community data. The small rural school districts of central Illinois are finding fewer and fewer options when considering maintaining or increasing the quality of education in their communities. Illinois school reform legislation of 1985 included a section on school district reorganization which was an effort to reduce the number of districts and increase the quality of education. However, the sentiment was so strong against forced reorganization that the plan for reorganization died a political …
