This study investigated a relationship suggested in the literature between the level of service which academic departments in former teachers' colleges render to the teacher-training function and the local or cosmopolitan role orientation of their faculties. Localism and cosmopolitanism are polar sets of role expectations toward which professors and other professionals might orient. Dimensions of the local-cosmopolitan concept are: level of loyalty to the employing organization, commitment to professional role skills, and the use of an inner or outer reference group.

A scale of local-cosmopolitanism was constructed for this investigation. Validity of the instrument was established by panel judgment and …

A Study Of The Utilization Of The Harper Community College Sixteen Millimeter Film Collection And Instructors' Motives For Using Those Films, Roger Joseph Rezabek

This study examined two aspects of sixteen millimeter film utilization at Harper Community College in northeastern Illinois, near Chicago. The first aspect of the study dealt with quantitative film usage by each of the seven subject area divisions of the college. The second aspect dealt with instructors' motives for selecting and using a particular film in a given instructional situation.

The data on film utilization showed that approximately 14% of the titles in the collection were used an average of more than five times per year. At the same time, over 16% of the titles in the collection were used …

Most institutions of higher education are interested in enrollment projections because they are closely related to institutional goals and missions and, are, therefore, essential to financial and program planning at every level. This study was undertaken to determine if relevant factors could be identified and used in a statistical forecasting model to project enrollments in a multidimensional urban community college within the accuracy limitations imposed by a state such as Virginia (who requires State institutions of higher education) to project their enrollment within (+OR-) 1 percent.;Two general types of statistical forecasting models, causal and extrapolation models were explored for use …

In response to the need for further research on promotion and tenure decisions, this study examined one of the criteria used in these decisions: inbreeding. Based on an analysis of the academic marketplace modifying Spence's theory of job market signaling behavior, the following research hypotheses guided the study: (1) female inbred faculty have patterns of productivity which are significantly different from the patterns of productivity of male inbred faculty; (2) inbred faculty show less professional advancement than noninbred faculty; and (3) inbred faculty receive fewer institutional rewards than noninbred faculty.;The data for the research was taken from the 1977 Survey …

This study was directed toward the discovery of a grounded theory that identifies the conditions and processes which facilitate effective implementation of federal mandates in institutions of higher education. The constant comparative method, an inductive approach to generating theory, was used to study the implementation of Title IX of the Higher Education Amendments of 1972 and the accompanying regulations and policy interpretations for elimination of sex discrimination in athletics.;The research population included public colleges and universities in Virginia. In this developmental study, basic principles of curriculum development were utilized to prepare a rationale and teaching guide for a college-level religion course "Life and Teachings of Jesus."

In formulating the rationale for the course, current theories of learning and moral development were reviewed together with ideas drawn from Scripture and other sources. The rationale that was developed called for establishing clear objectives while recognizing that some of the most important goals of religious instruction may not be objectively or immediately verifiable. The evaluation of the effectiveness of the Library Skills Learning Package as a means of teaching basic library skills to students enrolled in Speech Communication 1310 at Eastern Illinois University is the purpose of this study. The Library Skills Learning Package is a printed self-contained, instructional program consisting of explanations and procedures for use of specific resources and exercises which require the student to use a source in order to answer the questions.

The Cooperative Education program at Lake Land College strives to provide training for students in any vocational/technical career. This is accomplished by individualizing curriculum plans using courses available on campus and securing a training station for them in local business or industrial establishments. Title VIII funding for the school year 1979 - 80 provided an opportunity to develop curriculum packages for ten of the most requested career areas.
