It was in the belief that a summary of the course content of state courses of study in health education would be of value and interest in the light of present trends in curriculum construction that this study was written.

The purpose of this investigation was to survey sixteen state courses of study compiled by their respective state education departments, to determine the details of content considered most essential in health education at the high school level.

In some states physical education is not part of the curriculum but in others, such as California, it is required by law. For a period of twenty years beginning in 1918 when the writer became Superintendent of the Stockton Playground Department, annual reports of its major activities and accomplishments were made and submitted to the Mayor and later the City Manager for their information. They helped in securing the next budget. Throughout the thirty years of service additional reports of activities and improvements in facilities were kept on file in the office of the department for the information of its officers and a permanent record.

It was the purpose of this study to evaluate objectively the method of teaching men’s teams classes in physical education at Stockton College. A well organized instructional schedule consisting of elements from research versus the ‘free play’ method presents the problem in its varying aspects.

Both methods have been employed in the classes over a period of years and a committee has been organized to evolve a scientific approach as to content and teaching methods.
