The present study examined the relationship between school sector and academic achievement as measured by the mathematics and reading portions of the Kansas State Assessments. Archival data were used to obtain the percent of third-grade and fifth-grade students who were proficient in mathematics and reading for 919 schools (813 public, 106 private) across Kansas. The data were analyzed to identify extraneous variables that affect academic achievement and to determine if attending private or public schools resulted in higher academic achievement. Results indicate that, after extraneous variables are statistically controlled for, students who attend public schools achieve equal to or higher ...

The Growth Of Elementary And Secondary Education In Russell County, Kansas, Elmer L. Dougherty

Master's Theses

Throughout this work we shall carry one phase of the growth of education as it applies to a restricted geographical area. We must note from the beginning that the available material is very fragmentary even in a country whose existence spans only slightly more than half a century. No attempt was made by school administrators to keep an accurate history of their school systems. Records have been lost or misplaced. As a result, at this date it is impossible to clearly picture every part of the whole educational system within this restricted area , but the evidence which is still available ...

Master's Theses

A Comparison In The Efficiency Of The Teaching Of Arithmetic In Grades Four To Eight, Inclusive, In The Standard And Non-Standard, One-Room Rural Schools Of Western Kansas, Roy Ernest Mohr

Master's Theses

Considerable discussion regarding the effectiveness of the teaching in the one-room rural school versus the standard school has been going on for some time, and it is hoped that the results of this study will throw some light on this subject which appears to be more or less perplexing at the present time. Education has become a science and its accomplishments can be quite definitely measured by the use of standardized tests. Before their time, the task of comparing schools in educational achievement was practically impossible; with age-grade and achievement norms scientifically determined, it became a simple matter to make ...
