Foreign University Students’ Image Of The United States Of America, Austra P. Balks

Master's Theses

Observations

As a foreign-born student this writer has been exposed to differing views about the United States of America, particularly with respect to its ideological background and some facets to its culture. Many of these views have not corresponded with facts observed about life in the United States, as revealed to the writer after she had resided in this country for a time. Among fellow immigrants, this writer stated that the longer one lived in the United States one's attitude became more understanding and positive toward the United States.

The writer had observed earlier that in many respects the ...

A Survey Of The Use Of Educational And Occupational Information In Intermediate And Junior High Schools In Virginia, Norma Palmer Cogbill

Master's Theses

Although there has been a fourfold increase in the number of guidance personnel in Virginia public schools in the past decade, and at the same time a growth in the number of intermediate and junior high schools in the state, during this period there has been no state-wide survey describing the guidance services, or any aspects thereof, in the intermediate and junior high schools of Virginia. An essential feature of the guidance services in Virginia schools at the intermediate and junior high school level is the provision for the wide exploration of educational and occupational opportunities as preparation for present ...

An Investigation Of The Status, Functions, And Practices Of High School Homerooms In Virginia, Anne Hill Hayes Apr 1966

An Investigation Of The Status, Functions, And Practices Of High School Homerooms In Virginia, Anne Hill Hayes

Master's Theses

No data have been discovered determining exactly why or when the first homeroom originated. In a study by Galen Jones published in 1935, it was reported that there were two homerooms introduced between 1875-1879; two in the period 1900-1904; three, in 1905-1909; and nine in the period from 1910-1914. From then on the growth was rapid.

The homeroom appeared and developed with amazing rapidity because it seemed to offer a solution to the strong demand for a type of education which would include proper emphasis upon important physical, social, emotional, and spiritual factors largely ignored in traditional instruction.

Since its ...

Current Practices In Selection, Instruction, And Supervision Of School Bus Drivers In Virginia, William Gibbs Thomas Jan 1966

Current Practices In Selection, Instruction, And Supervision Of School Bus Drivers In Virginia, William Gibbs Thomas

Master's Theses

The transportation of school children to and from school has not always been the states' responsibility. The attitude of most educators before 1850 was that if students really wanted to come to school they would come even if they had to travel many miles. This attitude of the educated few did not lend itself to a tax-supported pupil transportation system.

The importance of the school bus driver cannot be overemphasized. It is the bus driver's responsibility to get the children to and from safely. There is considerable evidence that very few accidents result from mechanical failure of the bus ...
