Students With Autism: A Light/Sound Technology Intervention, Patricia Powell Woodbury

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of light/sound technology to promote sensory integration which facilitates the learning capacity of children with autism by reducing their high state of arousal, increasing time on task and decreasing acting-out behaviors. This research extended the work of A. Jean Ayres and Lorna King who theorized that the autistic individual's brain does not register, modulate or integrate sensations that most people notice; auditory and visual inputs are ignored more than other types of sensory stimuli. This study utilized light/sound technology to stimulate and desensitize these sensory channels to facilitate processing of …

Chief community college administrators do not believe--or are not willing to admit--that their full-time faculty are so engaged in outside employment.;When faced with years of the same teaching assignments, heavy teaching and advising workloads but limited opportunities and resources for professional growth and renewal, veteran community college faculty …

"Mattering" Doesn't Matter: An Analysis Of Adult Undergraduate Persistence Patterns, Terri Laskey Fauber

Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects

A steady rise in the number of nontraditional students combined with high attrition has raised questions about whether postsecondary institutions have been effective in creating environments that facilitate adult student success. This concern led to the current study which investigates whether adult undergraduate perceptions of environmental support and responsiveness to student needs affects persistence patterns.;Tinto's (1993) Academic and Social Integration Model and Schlossberg, Lynch, and Chickerings' (1989) ecological perspective have guided this study. Students' perceptions play a critical role in their willingness to become engaged or involved in the educational environment and therefore affect persistence. Schlossberg, Lasalle, and Golecs' (1990) …
