The Effect Of Balanced Strategy Instruction On English Language Learner Literacy, Jacqueline R. Wettlaufer Jan 2016

The Effect Of Balanced Strategy Instruction On English Language Learner Literacy, Jacqueline R. Wettlaufer

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

English Language Learner (ELL) achievement on standardized testing in a second language (L2; English) has been shown to be compromised due to L2 literacy deficits demonstrated by many of these students (Cheng, Fox, & Zheng, 2007; Solorzano, 2008; Zheng, Cheng, & Klinger, 2007). ELL achievement results on the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) literacy requirement, the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT), have remained consistently a minimum of 10% below that of students whose first language (L1) is English (Education Quality and Accountability Office, 2015a). The focus of this quasi-experimental study was to improve …

Professional Learning And Knowledge Transfer To Practice In Unregulated Care Provider Training In Resident-Centred Care, Sarah Pottier Jan 2016

Professional Learning And Knowledge Transfer To Practice In Unregulated Care Provider Training In Resident-Centred Care, Sarah Pottier

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Ongoing training for unregulated care providers (UCPs) in Ontario is required to meet the care needs of the aging population. Inconsistencies in standards and options for formal training for UCPs as well as the evolving complex needs of the aging population are factors contributing to needing training programs for UCPs in the workforce. This thesis examined the delivery and transfer of professional learning for UCP training in resident centred care. Increasing resident-centred care behaviours and knowledge were the primary aims of the training. One 128-bed long-term care home in southwestern Ontario volunteered to participate in this study while providing the …

The Effects Of Script On Reading Development Of Farsi And Arabic Bilinguals, Fatemeh Hosseini Almadani Jan 2016

The Effects Of Script On Reading Development Of Farsi And Arabic Bilinguals, Fatemeh Hosseini Almadani

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Knowledge of orthographic depth, the degree of letter-sound consistency, is one of the important skills that must be acquired by beginning readers. Vowelized Arabic and Farsi scripts are consistent in terms of grapheme-phoneme mappings and beginning readers should find it easier to read regular and consistent words. However, vowels are removed from Farsi and Arabic texts read by more experienced learners, which make these script forms more challenging for readers. Sixty students who were learning to read Farsi or Arabic (age range of 7-14 years) were tested for reading ability as well as cognitive and phonological processing in two languages: …

Evaluation Of An Abuse Prevention Education Program For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Karen E. Klee Jan 2016

Evaluation Of An Abuse Prevention Education Program For Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Karen E. Klee

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Abstract

An evaluation of an abuse protection education program was conducted for adults with developmental disabilities who receive supports and services from two Community Living Ontario agencies. Abuse education is mandated within the province of Ontario but few empirically evaluated curricula exist to help organizations provide effective education for this vulnerable population. A sample of 61 adults with varying degrees of cognitive ability were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control; information-only educational lessons; and an expanded program providing additional lessons on decision-making and behavioural skills thought necessary to prevent, recognize and report abuse. This program has been developed …
