Staying On Script: Sexual Scripts And Sex Education, Elizabeth Carol Hauck Jun 2015

Staying On Script: Sexual Scripts And Sex Education, Elizabeth Carol Hauck

Dissertations and Theses

Existing research suggests that men and women develop differing sexual scripts that influence their behavior, interactions and emotions regarding sex. The objective of this project is to examine the experiences of men and women with formal sex education programs, especially in regards to information about: anatomy and biology, sexual responsibility and risk taking, sexual desire, virginity and abstinence, as well as to explore sources of sex education outside of school. Several studies suggest masculine sexual scripts dictate that men generally construct a more body-focused approach to sex, with an emphasis on competition, aggression and achievement. Conversely, emphasized feminine sexual scripts …

Reliability And Validity Of Pedometers In A Free-Living Environment, Ernest Leroy Brown May 1995

Reliability And Validity Of Pedometers In A Free-Living Environment, Ernest Leroy Brown

Dissertations and Theses

In the field of exercise science there exists no single best method, or tool, for the measurement of physical activity, in particular, activity in everyday free-living conditions. The pedometer, a tool for recording the number of steps taken by an individual, could potentially measure this important component of free-living physical activity. To establish the reliability and validity of the pedometer, 40 subjects wore two pedometers (same brand) in two consecutive I 0-minute trials during normal daily activity. Both trials were videotaped. Each videotape segment was replayed, the number of steps were counted and this count served as the criterion measure …

Spiritual Health: Association For The Advancement Of Health Education Instructors' Attitudes, Practices And Training, Susanne Meyer Christopher Jan 1995

Spiritual Health: Association For The Advancement Of Health Education Instructors' Attitudes, Practices And Training, Susanne Meyer Christopher

Dissertations and Theses

Health education uses a holistic, multi-dimensional perspective (Hoyman, 1961; Donatelle, 1991; Hales, 1992). In recent years an emergent issue in health education is concern for disproportionate representation among the human dimensions--emotional, social, physical, intellectual, spiritual. Discussion occurs over the apparent underrepresentation of spiritual health in health education materials (Chandler & Kolander, 1990). While the professional literature contains articles discussing the under-representation of spiritual health (Jose & Taylor, 1986; Bensley, 1991), no empirical studies are available to assess the current status of spiritual health in health education materials or the spiritual health attitudes of health educators. This study provides empirical data …

Women Who Select Naturopathic Health Care During The Menopausal Transition: A Study In Grounded Theory, Dorothy S. Tibbetts Nov 1994

Women Who Select Naturopathic Health Care During The Menopausal Transition: A Study In Grounded Theory, Dorothy S. Tibbetts

Dissertations and Theses

A grounded theory method was used to investigate the experiences of women who use naturopathic medicine, a system of alternative therapy, for health care during the menopausal transition. Transcripts of 16 in-depth interviews with women who received naturopathic health care during the menopausal transition were analyzed with respect to three research questions: (a) Why do women seek naturopathic health care during the menopausal transition? (b) Do women who use naturopathic treatment for menopausal health care share similar experiences of menopause? and ( c) Are women satisfied with the naturopathic treatment they receive for menopausal health care? Conditions leading to informants' …

Determinants Of 2000 Meter Rowing Ergometer Performance, Jeff C. Young May 1990

Determinants Of 2000 Meter Rowing Ergometer Performance, Jeff C. Young

Dissertations and Theses

Lean body weight and aerobic and anaerobic factors have long been recognized as important determinants of performance in the 2000 meter (M) race distance for rowing. Current research with noninvasive techniques has important implications for training and performance but is inconclusive. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between a 2000 M rowing ergometer performance test (PT) and lean body weight (LBW), velocity at heart rate deflection (Vd), and anaerobic capacity (AC) in experienced rowers. Vd was used as an estimate of aerobic function. Thirteen trained male rowers (mean age 38.5 ± 8 years) were studied. Hydrostatic …

Energy Cost Of Resistive Exercise, Jan A. Polychronis Nov 1989

Energy Cost Of Resistive Exercise, Jan A. Polychronis

Dissertations and Theses

The energy cost of performing 1 and 3 sets of strength-type (6-8 RM) and endurance-type (30-35 RM) bench press exercise was estimated by indirect calorimetry in 10 male college students.

The total net energy cost of performing 3 sets of endurance-type resistive exercise (20.57 ± 1.86 kcal) was significantly (p <.05) greater than strength-type resistive exercise (15.24 ± 1.51 kcal) (mean ± SEM). Results were similar when energy cost was expressed relative to lean body mass. However, when expressed relative to the amount of work performed (kcal•kgm-1) the strength-type exercise (2.35 ± 0.19) resulted in a significantly (p <.05) greater expenditure of energy than did endurance-type exercise (1.64 ± 0.30). The energy cost relative to work performed was found to be significantly greater for 1 set of strength-type exercise than for any other condition (p <.05). The relationship between the energy cost of 1 set, multiplied by 3, and 3 sets was r=0.64 for endurance-type exercise and r=0.27 for strength-type exercise.

It was concluded that compared to strength-type resistive exercise, endurance-type resistive exercise requires a greater net energy expenditure. The results suggest that endurance-type exercise be performed by individuals who wish to expend the greatest amount of energy …

Body Weight Changes Throughout The Menstrual Cycle And Their Effect Upon The Components Of Body Composition, Lovina M. Query Feb 1984

Body Weight Changes Throughout The Menstrual Cycle And Their Effect Upon The Components Of Body Composition, Lovina M. Query

Dissertations and Theses

Research has shown that women experience fluctuations in body weight (BW) due to water retention and/or other processes at various times in the menstrual cycle. The purpose of this study is to measure women repeatedly throughout the course of one menstrual cycle and

(1) to confirm whether significant fluctuations in weight occur at various times and

(2) to determine whether there are significant differences in the components of body composition by hydrostatic weighing which are related to any changes in BW.

It was concluded that while significant fluctuations in BW occur at certain times in the menstrual cycle, the changes …

Lesbianism In Sport From The Perspective Of The Female Team Sport College Athlete And The Female Team Sport Recreational Player, Tracy Laura Jaynes Jan 1984

There were 32 female team sport college athletes representing four Utah university/college campuses and one Oregon university/college campus; 37 female team sport recreational players representing four Utah recreational team and two …

The Effects Of A Combined Weight Training And Running Program On Body Composition In College Males, Robert L. Hesslink Jr. Oct 1983

The Effects Of A Combined Weight Training And Running Program On Body Composition In College Males, Robert L. Hesslink Jr.

Dissertations and Theses

The present study attempted to investigate whether a combined weight and endurance training program can elicit more favorable changes in body composition than either method of training alone. Body composition parameters (absolute fat and fat-free weight) were evaluated using circumference measurements, skinfolds and hydrostatic weighing. Cardiorespiratory fitness was evaluated via a modified Harvard step-test. All tests were administered before and after 10 weeks of training. Exercises were performed 3 days/week for 40 minutes/day. Male volunteers (n=21) were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups (weight training only, endurance running only, combined weight training and endurance running).

The Work Values Of Secondary Teachers : A Comparative Study By Teaching Assignment, Charlotte Marie Klampe Jan 1983

The Work Values Of Secondary Teachers : A Comparative Study By Teaching Assignment, Charlotte Marie Klampe

Dissertations and Theses

The focus of this study was on the work values of secondary school teachers. Values have been defined in many ways. The common agreement is that values are standards, beliefs, or principles that do guide and direct a person's behavior. The values a teacher holds will influence a student due to the natural role-modeling effect in the classroom. With the advent of career education and exploration of the world of work, the values held toward work become a timely topic. The discussion of values and value clarification in all aspects of a person's life is one that is becoming very …

Comparisons Of The Habitual Activity Level Of Selected Women To Performance On The Bruce Multistage Treadmill Test And The Cooper 12 Minute Run Test, Teresa Carver Owen Feb 1979

Comparisons Of The Habitual Activity Level Of Selected Women To Performance On The Bruce Multistage Treadmill Test And The Cooper 12 Minute Run Test, Teresa Carver Owen

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the Cooper 12 Minute Run test and Bruce Multistage Treadmill test measure the same type of cardiovascular-endurance performance when testing adult women. A second purpose was to determine whether divergent levels of habitual activity by women are reflected in the scores on each test. Four groups of habitual activity were defined and labeled as follows: non-exercisers, minimal exercisers, adequate exercisers, and more than adequate exercisers. Ten healthy women were selected as subjects in each group. Subjects ranged in age from 22 to 35 years and were within the normal weight range …
