Inferring Organizational-Level Constructs From Individual-Level Data: A Factor Analytic Approach To Identify Organizational Climate , Mark Tuttle Jan 1981

Inferring Organizational-Level Constructs From Individual-Level Data: A Factor Analytic Approach To Identify Organizational Climate , Mark Tuttle

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Industrial/organizational psychologists have studied organizational climate for 20 years. This construct has been besieged with many problems. First, climate has been found to be empirically similar to other organizational constructs, resulting from a lack of conceptual boundaries. Second, climate has been assessed by aggregating data of individuals. The aggregation of individual data confounds the sources of (individual and group) variation. This study is an attempt to partition the variance of aggregated attitude items into individual and group variation, then factor analyze the separate sources of variation. The comparison of the factor structures then determines whether the measures are assessing ...

Evaluating An Instrument For Testout In A Business Communication Course , Carol S. David Jan 1981

Evaluating An Instrument For Testout In A Business Communication Course , Carol S. David

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Enrollment in college business communication courses has increased in the last decade. As a result, departments have had to develop procedures to allow better students to test out of such courses. At Iowa State University a two-phase procedure was developed which uses an initial objective test to screen students for the second phase, a written essay. The screening instrument must discriminate between students who can write at the level of B or better in the course and those who cannot; This study evaluated the test for its ability to predict a student's writing ability. Furthermore, placement errors of two ...

Investigation Of Students' Study Habits Under Traditional And Phase Achievement Systems Of Instruction In A College Biology Course , Abdullatif Jassim Al-Hashash

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present study evaluated the effectiveness of two different systems of instruction, the traditional method and the phase achievement method, and their relationship to different informational variables--use of lectures, textbooks, study guides and video cassette tapes provided for students in a college biology course at Iowa State University. The phase achievement method is a self-paced instructional system which shares some common elements with a personalized system of instruction (PSI), and Bloom's mastery strategy. In this system, learning objectives must be clearly defined, selected, and organized into relatively small units to help students as a guide and to provide levels ...

A Study Of Principals' Teaching Style Preference And Teachers' Teaching Style As A Source Of Bias In Teacher Evaluation , Dennis Wayne Rucker Jan 1981

A Study Of Principals' Teaching Style Preference And Teachers' Teaching Style As A Source Of Bias In Teacher Evaluation , Dennis Wayne Rucker

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The problem for this study was to determine if a predisposition for some teaching style, on the part of school principals, acts as a source of bias in the teacher evaluation process. It was hypothesized, therefore, that teachers who share a common preference for a teaching style with their respective principal would garner higher evaluative ratings than teachers whose styles were not similar to the principal;Data capture was conducted utilizing a random sample of elementary and secondary principals in the state of Iowa during the fall of 1980. Further, principals were requested to select superior and satisfactory teachers within ...

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The development and implementation of individualized education plans (IEPs) for all handicapped children is one of the important aspects of federally mandated Public Law 94-142, The Education for All Handicapped Act of 1975. Because the building principal has been identified as one who participates in the IEP process, it was appropriate to investigate, analyze and assess the role of Iowa elementary principals concerning the impact of the new responsibilities thrust upon them; Conclusions included the following: (1) Six IEP-type activities were perceived as a greater responsibility of elementary principals by elementary principals when compared with their teachers. But, two IEP-type ...

Instruments used included Tough's Interview Schedule and Guglielmino's Self-Directed Learning Readiness scale;Highly self-directed learners conducted higher numbers of learning projects, self-fulfillment projects, and experienced higher level of satisfaction with their projects than low self-directed ...

The Effect Of Team Programming On Student Achievement In Cobol Instruction , Nancy Ellen Miller Jan 1981

The Effect Of Team Programming On Student Achievement In Cobol Instruction , Nancy Ellen Miller

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

As computing systems, technology and the use thereof become more mature, new skills are being suggested for improving computer programming efficiency. Two of these skills are the use of structured programming and team programming. The subjects of this study of the effect of team programming were students enrolled in an introductory COBOL programming course at the University of Wisconsin--La Crosse during the Spring and Fall semesters of 1980. The subjects were divided into a control group who wrote programs in the traditional individualized manner and an experimental group who wrote programs in teams of three. Both groups used structured programming ...

Values In Three Generations Of Families , Steven William Roecklein Jan 1981

Values In Three Generations Of Families , Steven William Roecklein

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

We seek to further understand the relationships between generations. The purpose of the present study was to explore these relationships by deciding if a generation gap existed with the values of three generations of blood-related families. The literature reviewed revealed three competing positions regarding the existence of a generation gap. Some held that no gap has occurred, others believed a great gap has existed, and yet another group showed differences appearing on a selective basis; An additional question examined by this study was that, if differences were evident, would they be similar within cohorts (peer group) or within family lineages ...

The Iranian questionnaire was in Farsi; American subjects had an English version;Factor analysis showed six "qualifiers" to be loading ...

An Investigation Of Narrative Blend In The Expository Writing Of Students Enrolled In Introductory College Composition Courses , Jane E. Bell Jan 1981

An Investigation Of Narrative Blend In The Expository Writing Of Students Enrolled In Introductory College Composition Courses , Jane E. Bell

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation makes a contribution to composition research by enacting midrange theorizing that weds competent theoretical hypothesizing with practical classroom application; The researcher first establishes narrative blend as a valid theoretical construct. She operationally defines the construct through creation of an instrument for analysis of narrative blend in expository writing. The construct and the instrument which operationally defines it are then used to test assertions made within an experimental curriculum design calling for the transfer of narrative techniques to expository writing (Shaffer, 1979);The following hypotheses were tested within the study: (1) Narrative techniques in expository writing can be identified ...

Consonantal Phonemes In The Interlanguage Ot Native Spanish Speakers Acquiring English, Dorothy L. Coe-Guerrero Jan 1981

Consonantal Phonemes In The Interlanguage Ot Native Spanish Speakers Acquiring English, Dorothy L. Coe-Guerrero

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

In the past thirty-five years, second language acquisition theory has evolved from the structural/descriptive school of thought, through contrastive analysis, error analysis, and the hypothesis that second language acquisition is no different from first language acquisition, to the currently popular interlanguage hypothesis. Simultaneously, linguists have been examining the universal nature of language. Beginning with Trubetzkoy and Jakobson of the Prague School and continuing with Greenberg, Chomsky, Stampe, and others, linguists have been searching for structures and processes common to all languages, and for answers concerning the innateness of human speech. Until answers to such questions are found, "questions relating ...
