Collaboration is an ever-present element in scientific research today. Even within laboratories and research teams, colleagues need to analyze, interpret, and disseminate research outcomes individually. Despite this need, the interdependence of scientists is seldom emphasized. We have added collaborative skill to the learning outcomes of a qualitative analysis laboratory exercise. Student collaboration, interdependence and enjoyment were measured using an anonymous survey and showed a marked increase over the control group in all areas. Presented here is the design with results from the lab protocol testing phase.

Unconventional Reaction Media: A Solvent-Based Discovery Lab For First-Year Undergraduates, Conrad Addison

A general chemistry laboratory that illustrates the effectiveness and benign nature of unconventional reaction media is outlined in a three step procedure: 1) a solventless condensation reaction between two solids, 2) an oxidative coupling reaction in the presence of a liquid carbon dioxide solvent, and 3) the synthesis of an organic-transition metal complex in aqueous solvent. Rural Water Disinfection In The Developing World: Designing A General Chemistry Lab Experience, Mickey Doherty

A simple electrolysis apparatus was set up with a 10 wt% NaCl solution using a stainless steel cathode and a graphite anode to produce a hypochlorite ion solution. The hypochlorite ion solution was quantified to around 600 ppm by spectrophotometry analysis at 515 nm using N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine (DPD). The efficacy of the hypochlorite solution was determined by contaminating a 1 ppm solution of the hypochlorite solution with the sulfide-producing bacterium, Salmonella typhimurium.
