This study was designed to analyze the effect of guided reading on second graders reading achievement. This study also examined the effect guided reading had on students' attitude towards reading.

The subjects included forty-two second graders from a rural school in western New York. There were two second grade classes who participated in the study. The experimental group received guided reading. The control group did not.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a kindergarten home reading program with parents reading books to their children. The program required parents to read stories to their children and to discuss the stories afterwards. Subjects included 46 kindergarten students and their parents. The families came from an upstate New York suburban school district. The students participated in a half-day kindergarten program. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the practice of teachers reading aloud to students has perceived value. Surveys of teachers attitudes/behaviors and student attitudes/experiences concerning reading aloud to students were created to gather data. The data were analyzed qualitatively.

Thirty-six teachers and 106 students responded to questionnaires designed to elicit their opinions on the value of the read aloud process. The responses were recorded, tallied and categorized according to similarities and frequency.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of interrupted instruction, in the form of summer vacation, on reading achievement of high, middle, and low achieving students. The researcher determined the loss or gain by using Running Reading Records (RRR) from the ending of first grade moving to the beginning of second grade. A discussion of the relevance of year-round education (YRE) is included as well.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using fifth grade students' stories presented in a PowerPoint format as a tool for developing sight vocabulary for first graders.

The subjects were two heterogeneously grouped classes, a first grade and fifth grade class, from a suburban upstate school district in New York. This study investigated student-selected spelling words and teacher-selected spelling words. The subjects consisted of 14 urban second graders. Each week students took a spelling test of five teacher-selected words and five student-selected words. The scores on these tests were used to determine which type of spelling words the students performed better on. This study lasted four months. The data was analyzed using a t-test with dependent means. A descriptive analysis of the types of words selected was also performed.

Ninety surveys were distributed in urban, suburban, and rural school districts in western New York. The subjects were classroom teachers who responded to the surveys. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of commercially produced software. It evaluated the effectiveness of two different treatments and explored the relationship this may have upon increasing students' reading comprehension among fourth grade students. The subjects involved were forty heterogeneously grouped fourth grade students from a rural school setting school. The students were divided into two groups. A total of sixteen stories were read.
