Text Messaging Between School Counselors And Students: An Exploratory Study, Nicholas R. Gilly

Graduate Theses & Dissertations

This exploratory case study examines the impact of text messaging on mentoring relationships when used as an outreach between school counselors and high school students, where established relationships are lacking. An SMS gateway was used to mediate communication between school counselors (N=2) and students (N=5) over a three-month timeframe. The SMS gateway converted email, sent from counselors, to text messages, which were received on mobile devices of students and allowed students to respond back to counselors. Findings indicate that the use of text messaging may ease scheduling of face-to-face meetings between counselors and students, but evidence does not support any …

The economic, social, and personal value of education has been realized as motivating factors for seeking a better education overseas by individuals. In addition, political, economic, and educational conditions of home countries impact individuals’ decisions to study abroad. There were over 4 million tertiary students studying outside their home countries in 2011. Nearly 820,000 of those students were studying in higher education institutions in the United States. Students from China, India, and South Korea comprise nearly 49% of the international students in the United States. The major concern of these stakeholders is that many students who are leaving tertiary institutions lack the necessary employability skills needed for career success. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate if undergraduate schools of business are adequately preparing their students for the workplace through the incorporation of employability skills throughout the curriculum. To achieve this purpose, the study measured the perceptions of both final-year undergraduate business students and their professors to determine …

Along with other curricular changes in the postsecondary schools of today has come an added emphasis upon business and business subjects. Elaborating on this specific statement concerning business subjects, Veon notes that it is the responsibility of the school and of the instructors to provide the student with the high quality vocational education that will enable that student to have a successful life by securing a good initial job and adapting himself to that vocation.1

Accordingly, in the past few years Weber State College has developed one-year and two-year programs in Secretarial Science designed to meet the specific vocational …

The Uses Of Personal Typewriting By Students At Utah State University And Skyview High School, Joseph Henry Wilson

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

The changing concept of the uses of the typewriter has had an enormous effect on the teaching of typewriting. In addition to the vocational objective, the personal-use objective has been added. Personal-use typewriting has as its goal the material that the student is likely to typewrite for himself; vocational typewriting is focused on what others want typed for them. The distinguishing characteristic in teaching the two is therefore not the skill accomplishment so much as the kind of material involved (13).

A study released by Hosler and Maske (4) seems to substantiate the reasoning that students in a personal-use typing …

Much has been researched and written about school curriculum. A number of recent articles have focused attention on the student as an individual learner (Edmund, 1970) and away from "content" emphasis temporarily spurred by the advent of the Russian Sputnik (Cremin, 1961). Virtually every subject in the curriculum has been considered. The overall concern has been the improvement of student learning (Woolf, 1972). Efforts have also been made to increase the relevancy of learning.

According to Maze, "A society that guarantees the social and political freedom of its members, through democratic means, and which extends this freedom into the realm of economics, may be expected to place a heavy responsibility upon its members to protect these freedoms through the exercise of sound choices among alternative means to desired ends." The educational means by which the individual learns of these alternatives must be provided.
