Self-Criticism As Experienced By Performing Artists A Phenomenological Study, Rosemary Hakes
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to describe and document the essence of the experience of self-criticism for performing artists with the aim of providing recommendations for educational and therapeutic purposes. Moustakas (1994) defines essence as “that which is common or universal, the condition or quality without which a thing would not be what it is” (p. 100). In this study a phenomenological research paradigm was used. Each step in the data reduction process built directly toward revelation of essence through synthesis.
The central question guiding this research was: What is the essence of self-criticism as it is experienced by …

Beyond Skills To Meaning: Artists As Healers And Implications For Art Educators, Lucinda Lee Blackstone
Beyond Skills To Meaning: Artists As Healers And Implications For Art Educators, Lucinda Lee Blackstone
Theses Digitization Project
Art definitions and movements are changing just as the social paradigms they spring from. This exploration looked at paradigms in art of the past that have become the foundation for movements today. Currently the transformative powers art has to offer have been recognized. Colleges are beginning to train a major and a career. The literature review explored what role transformative art has played in artists' lives and looked at its uses in education. Conceptual art goes beyond the aesthetics of art and touches the mind and heart. I began to explore this kind of art in the nearby galleries. I …

The Artist Scholars: E Pluribus Unum: An Integration Of The Arts Into Middle School Curricula, Shawn Kevin Smith
Theses Digitization Project
The artist scholars: E pluribus unum is an exploratory curriculum designed to be implemented into middle schools. Adolescents experience a period of chaotic and emotional changes that can be both confusing and challanging. This cummiculum seeks to give adolescents a means of expressing themselves. By introducing students to performing arts, the literary arts, and the visual arts, adolescents will begin to answer the basic questions of being human: who are we? Where do we come from? How is knowledge constructed, used, and valued? Each unit consists of lesson plans intended to introduce students to the basic elements of the arts.

Teaching Practices Which Enhance Rhythm Development In Junior Primary Students : Case Studies In The South West Region Of Western Australia, Natalie Oddy
Theses : Honours
This thesis has arisen from a desire to enhance the benefits of musical development, in particular, rhythm, for children in junior primary classrooms. Music plays an important role in the overall development of the child as it ''aids a child's development in other areas such as overall academic achievement, ability to concentrate, creative and artistic expression, social skills and emotional stability" (Parkinson, 1989, p. 3). Therefore music education plays an important part in the academic curriculum. The researcher selected rhythm as the element of music to focus on as it is "the most basic element of music" (Latham and Sadie, …
