Codebook: The Lsay 1995 Year 9 Sample Wave 10 (2004) Technical Report No. 33, Kylie Hillman
LSAY Technical Reports
In 1995, a nationally representative sample of approximately 13,000 Year 9 students was selected to form the first cohort of the new Longitudinal Surveys of Australian Youth program. The sample was constructed by randomly selecting two Year 9 classes from a national sample of 300 schools designed to represent state and sector. Reading and numeracy tests were administered to students in their schools to provide information on school achievement for use in later analyses of educational and labour market participation. Students also completed a background questionnaire about their educational and vocational plans and attitudes to school. In 1996, these students …

Indigenous Students And Literacy And Numeracy: What Does The Research Say?, Nola Purdie, Alison Stone
Indigenous Education Research
Indigenous students typically achieve at significantly lower levels than non-Indigenous students by the time they reach year 3. This article reports on the findings of a longitudinal study conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research called the Longitudinal English Literacy and Numeracy Survey for Indigenous Students commenced in 2000. The findings show that there are several key underlaying factors present in schools that support growth in achievement for Indigenous students: leadership; good teaching; student attendance and engagement; and Indigenous presence at the school.

With Liberty And Development For All: Review Essay, David Moshman
Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications
The relation of liberty to development occupies the eight authors and editors of these seven books and additional authors of chapters within two of them. Their backgrounds and perspectives are diverse, ranging across psychology, education, law, history, and economics; encompassing dozens of European, Asian, African, and American cultures; and applying divergent conceptions of children and development. Most argue in various ways and for various reasons that liberty fosters development. Some add that development, in turn, fosters liberty, in a relation so close that freedom and development cannot be sharply distinguished.

Item-Writing Rules: Collective Wisdom, Bruce B. Frey, Stephanie Petersen, Lisa Edwards, Jennifer Teramoto Pedrotti, Vicki Peyton
College of Education Faculty Research and Publications
In student assessment, teachers place the greatest weight on tests they have constructed themselves and have an equally great interest in the quality of those tests. To increase the validity of teacher-made tests, many item-writing rules-of-thumb are available in the literature, but few rules have been tested experimentally. In light of the paucity of empirical studies, the validity of any given guideline might best be established by relying on experts. This study analyzed twenty classroom assessment textbooks to identify a consensus list of item-writing rules. Forty rules for which there was agreement among textbook authors are presented. The rules address …

Promoting And Investigating Students’ Uptake Of Reflective Practice: A Pakistan Case, Jane Rarieya
Promoting And Investigating Students’ Uptake Of Reflective Practice: A Pakistan Case, Jane Rarieya
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
Today reflection is considered one of the essential principles underlying good teaching practice and teacher education. However, this tacit acknowledgement that teachers need to be reflective practitioners and the development of reflective practice has largely been in the West. Teachers in Pakistan and most of the developing world are generally unaware of what the term ‘reflective practice’ means. This article presents findings of a study that was undertaken to observe course participants' uptake of an alternate approach to engaging students in reflective practice during a module offered to students in the Masters programme at the Aga Khan University–Institute for Educational …

General University of Maine Publications
Inside UMaine was the employee newsletter issued starting in 2005. The newsletter was published once each month during the academic year. The intent was to "complement the university's other communication vehicles, including the UMaine Today magazine, UMaine Today Online and various other online Information Services, such as the university's Web-based calendar." The newsletter took over where the Maine Perspective left off to promote professional achievement and stories about campus events and advancements.

The impact of haptic feedback on the perception of unknown objects (10 without texture, 10 with texture, and 2 complex shapes) was examined. Using a point probe (a PHANTOM), three treatment groups of students (visual, haptic, and visual plus haptic feedback) explored a set of virtual objects. The visual treatment group observed the objects through a small circular aperture. Accuracy of perception, exploration time, and description of objects were compared for the three treatment groups. Participants included 45 visually normal undergraduate students distributed across the three treatment groups and 4 blind students composing a second hapticonly group. Results showed that, …

Is There A Need To Debate The Role Of Higher Education And The Public Good?, Sandra Fisher
Articles
Calls for sustaining and increasing investment in higher education are often made on the basis that higher education is a `public good'. The idea of higher education as a public good is frequently conceptualized in terms of its contribution to economic development. If more people participate in higher education then society as a whole will benefit. Outside of the economic benefits of higher education there is less debate as to what is meant by `public good' in the context of higher education. This paper explores higher education as a public good and its role in realizing the public good (Jonathan …
