Teaching Routines And Student-Centered Mathematics Instruction: The Essential Role Of Conferring To Understand Student Thinking And Reasoning, Eva Thanheiser, Kathleen Melhuish Jan 2023

Teaching Routines And Student-Centered Mathematics Instruction: The Essential Role Of Conferring To Understand Student Thinking And Reasoning, Eva Thanheiser, Kathleen Melhuish

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We compare two lessons with respect to how a teacher centers student mathematical thinking to move instruction forward through enactment of five mathematically productive teaching routines: Conferring To Understand Student Thinking and Reasoning, Structuring Mathematical Student Talk, Working With Selected and Sequenced Student Math Ideas, Working with Public Records of Students’ Mathematical Thinking, and Orchestrating Mathematical Discussion. Findings show that the lessons differ in the enactment of teaching routines, especially Conferring to Understand Student Thinking and Reasoning which resulted in a difference in student-centeredness of the instruction. This difference highlights whose mathematics was being centralized in the classroom and whether …

Zoom Affordances And Identity: A Case Study, Angela Cirucci Jan 2023

Zoom Affordances And Identity: A Case Study, Angela Cirucci

College of Communication & Creative Arts Faculty Scholarship

While how to engage students in online settings is a popular topic of study, largely left out are the ways in which virtual learning environments (VLEs) have implications for identity performance (and subsequently learning quality). This case study pairs a walkthrough analysis of Zoom with an open-ended survey (n = 250, M = 21.5) to investigate how VLE affordances impact student identifications. Findings indicate that students prefer Zoom because it is “user-friendly,” forgoing wordy options and instead presenting a more “appified” user interface. Students were concerned about their classmates and professors seeing their physical backgrounds, particularly those who reported family …

Honoring The Legacy Of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rickey Rogers

Press Releases

As we reflect on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, it is important to remember that Dr. King was a civil rights activist who fought continuously for racial equality and social justice. Dr. King condemned discrimination and segregation because of race, and he affirmed that the American dream belonged to all citizens and that everyone should have an equal opportunity to reach that dream.

Dr. King emphasized nonviolent protests and unity's importance as he fought for justice. I remember reading a quote: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’"

Dr. King did not …

Toward A Debugging Pedagogy: Helping Students Learn To Get Unstuck With Physical Computing Systems, Colin Hennessy Elliott, Alexandra Gendreau Chakarov, Jeffrey B. Bush, Jessie Nixon, Mimi Recker

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine how a middle school science teacher, new to programming, supports students in learning to debug physical computing systems consisting of programmable sensors and data displays.

Design/methodology/approach

This case study draws on data collected during an inquiry-oriented instructional unit in which students learn to collect, display, and interpret data from their surrounding environment by wiring and programming a physical computing system. Using interaction analysis, we analyzed video recordings of one teacher’s (Gabrielle) pedagogical moves as she supported students in debugging their systems and drew upon a variety of embodied, material, and social …

Racial Disparities In School Poverty And Spending: Examining Allocations Within And Across Districts, Robert Bifulco, Sarah Souders Jan 2023

Racial Disparities In School Poverty And Spending: Examining Allocations Within And Across Districts, Robert Bifulco, Sarah Souders

Center for Policy Research

Using recently available school-level finance data, we compare exposure to low-income classmates and average per pupil spending for black, Hispanic, and white students. Using within metropolitan area comparisons, we find that the typical black and Hispanic students attend schools with much higher proportions of low-income students than the typical white student, and that per pupil spending in the typical black and Hispanic students’ schools is higher than in the typical white student’s school. Drawing on estimates of the additional spending required to provide low-income students equal educational opportunity, we find that it is unlikely that the additional spending in schools …

Does A College Degree Really Influence Economic Success? It's Complicated, Aaron W. Hughey Jan 2023

Does A College Degree Really Influence Economic Success? It's Complicated, Aaron W. Hughey

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

Higher education in the United States is currently facing a myriad of challenges, most of which are self-inflicted. Having a more educated populace, in and of itself, does not necessarily guarantee any advantages to anyone. We can blame shifting demographics, evolving economic realities and changing societal priorities – but the ultimate responsibility for our present circumstance lies squarely with those within the academy.

Support For Working Students: Understanding The Impacts Of Employment On Students' Lives, Rebecca Summer, Megan Mccoy, Isabelle Trujillo, Esperanza Rodriguez Jan 2023

Support For Working Students: Understanding The Impacts Of Employment On Students' Lives, Rebecca Summer, Megan Mccoy, Isabelle Trujillo, Esperanza Rodriguez

University Honors College Faculty Publication and Presentations

The majority of college students work, and there are well-documented findings about the impacts of student work on academic performance. However, there is little research on the impacts of this work on other aspects of students’ lives. In this study we ask: What are the impacts of student employment beyond academic performance? Using our methodological approach of student-driven research and a mix of quantitative and qualitative analysis, we find that work has four main impacts on students’ lives: it limits flexibility in students’ schedules, leaving them vulnerable in emergencies; it requires students to make difficult financial calculations; it can cause …

A Collective Journey: Coalitional Critical Consciousness And Collaborative Methodologies In Bilingual Teacher Education, Rachel Snyder Bhansari Jan 2023

A Collective Journey: Coalitional Critical Consciousness And Collaborative Methodologies In Bilingual Teacher Education, Rachel Snyder Bhansari

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article analyzes critical reflection groups held over the course of a year-long collaborative ethnography between me as researcher and five novice bilingual teachers. Drawing on feminist theories of emotion as knowledge, I argue that coalitional critical consciousness developed in our meetings through emotional expression and acknowledgment of identity in connection to systems of power. I also explore the affordances of collaborative methods in the formation of collective critique for practicing teachers.

Covid-19 Education Response Mapping Study: Building Resilience In Lao Pdr: Readiness, Response, And Recovery, Yung Nietschke, Anna Dabrowski, Maya Conway, Chaula Yoga Pradhika

International Education Research

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) crisis has caused unprecedented levels of disruption to education systems worldwide. Across the Asia region, it is estimated that around 760 million children were impacted by school closures at the height of the pandemic. Government response strategies have varied across the region, with some countries imposing prolonged school lockdowns while others have had short, repeated closure periods. As countries begin to reopen schools and continue to prepare for subsequent waves of COVID[1]19 infection, there is a need to develop the greater capability of education systems to safeguard learning and address persistent barriers to learning equality …

International Education Research

This document provides a summary of research exploring the systems, policies, and school-level practices that have supported learning continuity in Asia during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on a review of policy documents on COVID-19 responses in Asia and a deep dive analysis of system and school-level responses in the Philippines and the Kyrgyz Republic, the findings from this study provide policymakers and education stakeholders with evidence of promising practices that could be leveraged to support learning recovery and education system resilience. In addition, a policy review was conducted on the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), which focused …
