Bounding Average Returns To Schooling Using Unconditional Moment Restrictions, Desire Kedagni, Lixiong Li, Ismael Mourifie Dec 2018

Bounding Average Returns To Schooling Using Unconditional Moment Restrictions, Desire Kedagni, Lixiong Li, Ismael Mourifie

Economics Working Papers

Abstract. In the last 20 years, the bounding approach for the average treatment effect (ATE) has been developing on the theoretical side, however, empirical work has lagged far behind theory in this area. One main reason is that, in practice, traditional bounding methods fall into two extreme cases: (i) On the one hand, the bounds are too wide to be informative and this happens, in general, when the instrumental variable (IV) has little variation; (ii) while on the other hand, the bounds cross, in which case the researcher learns nothing about the parameter of interest other than that the IV ...

Model Misspecification And Assumption Violations With The Linear Mixed Model: A Meta-Analysis, Brandon Lebeau, Yoon Ah Song, Wei Cheng Liu Dec 2018

Model Misspecification And Assumption Violations With The Linear Mixed Model: A Meta-Analysis, Brandon Lebeau, Yoon Ah Song, Wei Cheng Liu

Department of Psychological and Quantitative Foundations Publications

This meta analysis attempts to synthesize the Monte Carlo literature for the linear mixed model under a longitudinal framework. The empirical type I error rate will serve as the effect size and Monte Carlo simulation conditions will be coded to serve as moderator variables. The type I error rate for the fixed and random effects will be explored as the primary dependent variable. Effect sizes were coded from 13 studies, resulting in a total of 4,002 and 621 effect sizes for fixed and random effects. Meta-regression and proportional odds models were used to explore variation in the empirical type ...

Questioning The Dogma Of Banned Books Week, Elliott Kuecker Dec 2018

Questioning The Dogma Of Banned Books Week, Elliott Kuecker

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This article examines the dogmatic celebration of Banned Books Week in libraries in the United States through Foucault's notion of the speaker's benefit and the repressive hypothesis. Given that the books featured during Banned Books Week are not legally banned, but actually widely available, it appears this celebration does more for the identity of the field of librarianship than it does to fight censorship.

The Undergraduate That Could: Crafting A Collaborative Student Training Program, Jennifer L.A. Whelan, Jared Andrew Rex

Staff publications

Since the mid-19th century, student worker programs have been an integral component of academic libraries, and the evolution of the profession has put more students, even undergraduates, into positions with greater responsibility, raising questions about the level of expertise of which undergraduate students are capable. The authors address these questions through the lens of the collaborative redevelopment of two distinct library student worker programs at a small liberal arts college. Included is a discussion of successes and challenges, as well as a consideration of the benefits of a “cross-library” support system in developing such a program.

Approximately 25% of these graduate programs appeared to provide a modest level of training. Over 50% of these units did not fully identify what program evaluation preparation was required or offered to students. Recommendations to enhance the program evaluation component ...
