The 2012 Festival will be held at the Collins Center for the Arts on February l Sth and will feature matinee and evening performances. We intend to involve as many relevant campus groups and departments as possible to make this a true campus wide collaboration. As in past years this event will be free so that people of Maine have access to the cultural vitality of the University of Maine. In past years people have come from as far away as Presque Isle and Portland to enjoy this event.

Ballads in Maine Workshop consists of a panel discussion/performance and audience participation of several ballads collected in Maine. A history of ballad collecting in the British and American tradition presented by Pauleena MacDougall, Ballads as Literature presented by Sarah Harlan-Haughey and performance of ballads by musicians Julia Lane and Jeff McKeen. We will also invite the audience in advance to bring their favorite ballad and have an open discussion with the audience about ballads and ballad singing. The first International Dance'Festival was held in 2005 at Minsky Hall and was sponsored by the Office of International Programs, Multicultural Programs, Student Heritage Alliance Center and the international student groups across campus. The event brought all the international organizations tog'ether and created a base to share and work with each other collaboratively. The success of this event inspired the student groups involved to make this celebration of cultural diversity an annual event and to expand on the quality and depth of participation. The majority of the financial support for the Series will be provided by the English Department through its Elliott Fund and by the National Poetry Foundation through its Thayer Fund. The Honors College provides $1000 per semester to support the Series. The detailed budget appended to this letter provides an overview of projected expenses and revenue sources. Dance classes are extremely popular with students and enrollments and attendance have gone up. Consequently, there are always waiting lists for students to enroll in classes, particularly beginning classes, as well as lines in the lobby at the performances. This is due to the efforts of our professional faculty and staff, who make dance at UM a significant learning experience that rounds out a student's education. Dance classes culminate in actual dance concert performances that feature jazz, ballet, tap, modern, hip hop, and international themes.

Six exhibitions are presented each year by the Department of Art in the Lord Hall Gallery. These exhibitions include work by students and faculty as well as a range of nationally known and exhibited artists. This coming spring semester, the Lord Hall Gallery will house an exhibition of print-based imagery created by artists from across the country. Spring Awakening is a rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play of the same title by Frank Wedekind. It features music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. Set in late-l9th century Germany, it concerns teenagers who are discovering the inner and outer tumult of sexuality. The original play was banned in Germany for some time due to its frank portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and suicide. How I Learned to Drive by Paula Vogel premiered on March 16,1997 Off-Broadway at the Vineyard Theatre. Vogel received the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the work. It was written and developed at the Perseverance Theatre Juneau, Alaska, Molly Smith, artistic Director. The story follows the strained, sexual relationship between Li'l Bit and her aunt's husband, Uncle Peck, from her adolescence through her teenage years into college and beyond. Using the metaphor of driving and the issues of pedophilia, incest, and misogyny, the play explores the ideas of control and manipulation.

I am requesting funding for Dr. Vaughn Bryant's recent visit (March 19-21) to UMaine where he met with a diversity of researchers across campus and presented two lectures on his areas of expertise. Vaughn is Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Palynology Laboratory at Texas A&M University. He is internationally known for his research in forensic pollen analysis, prehistoric diet reconstruction, honey research, and in the reconstruction of paleoenvironments. Dr. Bryant conducts extensive forensic palynological investigations for the CIA, DOE, and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Thomas Gansch is one of the most recognizable trumpeters in the world today. As the lead trumpet/singer in the Austrian cult brass ensemble, Mnozil Brass, he has performed in over 40 countries and has become a YouTube legend for the Mnozil Brass cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Gansch is also the co-composer of two Mnozil Brass operettas (German language theater pieces), which have been performed throughout Germany and Austria, including as part of the famous Salzburg Festival, and the stage of Berliner Ensemble, founded by Bertold Brecht.

IN 2006, the Clinical Psychology Diversity Committee was established in order to develop more consistency within the clinical psychology department in terms of the amount of attention paid to diversity issues across courses, research programs, clinical settings, and individual students. Since then, the diversity committee has been heavily involved in the enhancement of efforts to recruit and retain ethnically and culturally diverse faculty and students (graduate and undergraduate) in both the psychology program, and university-wide. This proposal requests $600 in support of our effort to bring Maine Poet Laureate Wesley McNair to campus for a two-day visit Spring 2012 semester, most likely on a Wednesday-Thursday in April. McNair has expressed enthusiastic interest in doing a multi-media public presentation and book signing, as well as visiting Maine literature and creative writing courses and meeting informally with creative writing students. The English Department through the Lloyd Elliott fund and the University Bookstore will be contributing to the cost of this visit; the DLS grant would fund the portion of the honorarium devoted to the public presentation.

Communication & Journalism will bring Greg Goodale, Associate Professor of Rhetoric at Northeastern University, to campus for a lecture and a class visit in Spring of 2012, April2-3. Professor Goodale is an emerging star in the study of rhetoric, in particular on the place of sound in Communication. His 201 I book, Sonic Persuasion: Reading Sound in the Recorded Age, is groundbreaking. For his visit, Professor Goodale will present from his book in the CMJ Spring Colloquium Series on Monday, April 2. On Tuesday, he will guest teach in CMJ 201 (introduction to rhetorical theory) on sound and violence.
