Developments in computer technology have altered the teaching and learning process, particularly in areas of teacher preparation. Teacher education, perhaps more than any other academic discipline, utilizes the application of computer technology in human resources for both the actions of teaching and learning content and the actions of preparing others to use technology. The California State University System (CSU) has responded to the need for technologically enhanced learning by establishing specific behavior/knowledge standards for teacher education candidates. San Jose State University (SJSU) is one of the leading institutions to coordinate an institutional response to the need for technology-assisted training of …

Service-Learning As A Tool For Enhancing Student Outcomes In A College-Level Lecture Course, Amy Strage
Service-Learning As A Tool For Enhancing Student Outcomes In A College-Level Lecture Course, Amy Strage
Faculty Publications
This article reports on the effects of infusing a 20-hour per semester service-learning requirement into a large Introductory Child Development course. Analyses of student outcomes on course assignments revealed that the 166 students in the service-learning cohorts (2 classes) out-performed the 309 students who took the course during the three semesters prior to the introduction of the service-learning requirement. The advantage for the service-learning students appeared to stem primarily from stronger performance on narrative assessments (midterm and take-home final essays), and appeared to manifest itself only later in the semester. Analyses of students’ journals confirmed that students reflected thoughtfully about …

Predictors Of College Adjustment And Success: Similarities And Differences Among Southeast-Asian Americans, Amy Strage
Faculty Publications
The role of students' family backgrounds and rapport with instructors and peers as predictors of five indices of the adjustment and success were examined, for a cohort of 150 Southeast-Asian-American, Hispanic and White college students. Ethnic differences emerged for nearly all predictor and outcome measures. Discussion of these patterns includes consideration of the origins of a learned-helpless profile characteristic of many of the Asian-American students and of a mastery orientation characteristic of many of the Hispanic and White students.
Toward A Pedagogy Of Relation, Alexander M. Sidorkin
Toward A Pedagogy Of Relation, Alexander M. Sidorkin
Faculty Publications
One of the main intellectual trends in American educational philosophy could be described as a shift from the pedagogy of behavior to the pedagogy of relation. Not a widely used term, pedagogy of relation nevertheless captures the shared intent of otherwise widely diverse group of writers. It is mainly, but not exclusively, associated with feminist thinkers like Nel Noddings, Jane R. Martin, and Carol Gilligan. Among non-feminists, one can mention a group of philosophers who support one or another form of proceduralism (often inspired by Jurgen Habermas), Gert Biesta_s communicative pedagogy, and Frank Margonis and his relational ontology.

Caregivers Locus Of Control For Child Improvement, Timothy B. Smith
Caregivers Locus Of Control For Child Improvement, Timothy B. Smith
Faculty Publications
A potentially important variable that has received little attention in the disabilities literature is the caregiver's locus of control beliefs for child improvement as they relate to treatment compliance and actual child improvement. To evaluate the construct's utility in a practice setting, 131 caregiver-child dyads were assessed twice, twelve months apart. Children were an average of approximately four years old at the first assessment, and all of them had mild to severe developmental disabilities. Aspects of caregiver compliance to treatment were rated, and measures of child development status, family functioning, and caregiver locus of control were administered. Results indicated that …
