Narrative Comprehension: Semantic And Syntactic Summary Production, Jane F. Devick
Narrative Comprehension: Semantic And Syntactic Summary Production, Jane F. Devick
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to examine from a syntactic and narrative structure perspective two narrative summary types: a summary with a length constraint and an unconstrained summary. In addition, this research served to develop a multidimensional theory of narrative comprehension.
College freshmen read two short stories written by written by Sake and were asked to write a constrained summary for one text and an unconstrained summary for the other text. Following this the subjects completed a metacognitive questionnaire. The summaries were analyzed to examine transitivity features and narrative structure features. The metacognitive questionnaires were examined to extract information …

The achievement problems in U.S. schools can be seen clearly at our border. Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas, are about a mile apart, separated by the Rio Grande. For years, one of my former doctoral students was on the faculty of the University of Texas at El Paso and directed the remedial center. Students who were having trouble in a variety of subjects, including mathematics, came to the center for tutoring by undergraduates and graduate students. In reviewing who was hired by the center over a number of years, she observed that Americans were rarely hired to tutor in …
The Effects Of Chinese Painting Appreciation Education On The Artistic Achievement Of Junior High School Students In Taiwan, Hsiu-Hsiung Chen
The Effects Of Chinese Painting Appreciation Education On The Artistic Achievement Of Junior High School Students In Taiwan, Hsiu-Hsiung Chen
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For the Chinese, fine art is one of the most important items in human life. The goals of fine arts education enhance the student so that s/he can make reasonable judgments about work, gain knowledge of color and understand the process of designing environmental layouts. Related technique and creativity training are offered students in accordance with individual differences and social expectations.
Traditionally, Taiwan's junior high school fine art program teaches mainly painting technique. The Ministry of Education in Taiwan determines the curriculum of junior high school fine art education. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of …
Community Service Throughout A School System, Anne Bishop
Community Service Throughout A School System, Anne Bishop
Service Learning, General
Teachers crave moments when student interest is high, questions flow freely, and learning is vivid enough to be retained. One such moment occurred when an elementary student in an environmental service project with wetlands volunteers said, "I learned that there are different types of wetlands and ours is a freshwater wetland that we are helping to stay fresh." These moments happen more often when students actively engage in experiences that involve helping others than during lecture, pencil and paper exercises, or assigned reading. Combined, service and learning become uniquely powerful (Kendall 1990). Facts learned in the classroom become a springboard …

Genomics: Past & Future
AT THE END OF THE ROAD in Little Cottonwood Canyon, near Salt Lake City, Alta is a place of near-mythic renown among skiers. In time it may well assume similar status among molecular geneticists. In December 1984, a conference there, co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, pondered a single question: Does modern DNA research offer a way of detecting tiny genetic mutations—and, in particular, of observing any increase in the mutation rate among the survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings and their descendants? In short the answer was, Not yet. But in an atmosphere of rare intellectual fertility, …

The Effects Of The Leadership Styles Of Taiwanese Junior College Presidents On Teacher Job Satisfaction, Ching-San Chiang
The Effects Of The Leadership Styles Of Taiwanese Junior College Presidents On Teacher Job Satisfaction, Ching-San Chiang
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation was to investigate the relationship between the leadership styles of Taiwanese junior college presidents and teacher job satisfaction. The study examined the difference in teachers' perceptions of presidents' leadership style and teachers' job satisfaction, the degree of agreement between teachers' perceptions and presidents' self-perceptions, the difference in leadership style and presidents' age, tenure, school status and size; the difference in job satisfaction and teachers' gender, age, job tenure, education, academic rank, school status, and school size.
Data were obtained from 20 presidents and 282 teachers. The Presidents' Leadership Orientations questionnaire collected data from presidents. The …

Using Distance Education To Improve Teaching In Namibia: Teachers' Views On An Inservice Training Program., Ndinovaameni Christian Shatona
Master's Capstone Projects
Teacher education in Namibia is likely to involve more participants and more expenditure in the future. Analysis of the substance and character of teacher education programs as seen by the teachers are very important for the public. This study is a compilation of the thoughts of almost 70 teachers enrolled in a distance teacher education program. Their views are captured in conversations, observations, interviews and on questionnaires. Voice is an important aspect of the study, for both content and tone. The actual words of teachers have been quoted directly and at leng·h, so that they may speak for themselves, as …

At the University of Pittsburgh, Generations Together, an Intergenerational Studies Program develops programs that bring young and old together in ways that benefit both generations. The University Challenge for Excellence Program (DCEP) works with entering students who are often first generation, mostly African-American, and who may be in need of special assistance during their first year. UCEP seeks ways to raise their self esteem, give them a sense of purpose, connect them to the University, and ultimately to retain them at Pitt through graduation. In 1994, these two university programs joined together with the Housing Authority of the City of …

ADAPT Lessons: Mathematics
This mathematical exercise is presented in the form of a learning cycle. The purpose of the exercise is to experience the application of elementary pure mathematics (9th grade algebra) to solve a physical and a geometric problem. The content is actually a special case of what has been called spirolaterals.
The physical problem is to hang six different weights on a windchime so it hangs level. The geometric problem is to construct an equiangular hexagon with side lengths 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 if possible.

IMSA History
It is our privilege to share with you the First Decade Report of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, an educational laboratory engaged in serious inquiry about critical issues of teaching and learning.
Ten years ago, IMSA opened its doors with 210 students, 12 faculty members, 21 courses, no residence halls, no computers, no external programs, many unanswered questions and an uncertain future. During our early years, we faced many challenges; these strengthened our resolve and deepened our commitment to transform teaching and learning in mathematics, science and technology.
While IMSA is still a very young enterprise, in ten short …

Concerns are being raised in both professional literature as well as in the popular press regarding certain aspects of the literature-based movement. Here we report on findings from a longitudinal study of a group of first -grade teachers who have been attempting (with varying degrees of success)to introduce literature-based teaching strategies into their classrooms. We inspect the experiences of these teachers in relation to four areas of concern that have been raised regarding literature-based teaching: 1. skills instruction; 2.guided reading strategies; 3. literature selection;and 4. thematic teaching (or curriculum integration). We describe classroom practices and the 9 problems and possibilities …

This NebGuide explains Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome--its symptoms, transmission and diagnosis; and it discusses methods of prevention, management and control.
History
Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) was first observed in 1986 in the United States and in 1990 in Europe. The syndrome was initially called Mystery Pig Disease in the United States since no known swine pathogens could be implicated. A number of titles have been used to describe this disease syndrome: swine infertility and respiratory syndrome (SIRS), porcine epidemic abortions and respiratory syndrome (PEARS), blue-eared pig disease as well as others. Since 1992, PRRS has been the …
