Before school-based decision making can change teaching and learning for the better, we must make some changes in the reform itself.

McMillan Magnet Center is located in urban Omaha, Nebraska, and specializes in math, computers, and communications. Once a junior high school, it was converted to a magnet center for seventh and eighth graders in the 1983-84 school year as part of Omaha's voluntary desegregation plan. Now 'the ethnic makeup of the student population is about 50% black and 50% white, with a few other minorities. This document seeks to archive McMillan's success in its mission to become a technology magnet school, including nationally recognized achievements in ~ethnology integration and Internet connectivity. McMillan's technological leadership came about thanks in large part …

Curriculum Integration And The Disciplines Of Knowledge, James A. Beane
Curriculum Integration And The Disciplines Of Knowledge, James A. Beane
Service Learning, General
At a conference on curriculum integration, a speaker who admitted that he had only recently been introduced to the concept said, "From a quick look at various readings, it seems that the disciplines of knowledge are the enemy of curriculum integration." Unwittingly or not, he had gone straight to the heart of perhaps the most contentious issue in current conversations about curriculum integration. Simply put, the issue is this: If we move away from the subject-centered approach to curriculum organization, will the disciplines of knowledge be abandoned or lost in the shuffle?

Teacher Resistance To Implementation, Ken R. Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
Excerpt: "When teachers first confront the requirement that they implement some new idea or method into their teaching, they can respond in any of several ways. If we view on a continuum the many possible responses to such a requirement, we will see on one end those teachers who flatly refuse to make any changes. They may rationalize that their pedagogy requires no change or that they already know better than curriculum designers and consultants what needs to occur in their own classrooms and' even in classrooms in general. Jumping to the other extreme of our continuum, we find those …

The Potential For Critical Social Inquiry Through Environmental Education In The Philippines, Ken Byrne
The Potential For Critical Social Inquiry Through Environmental Education In The Philippines, Ken Byrne
Master's Capstone Projects
The rate and extent of deforestation in the Philippines is phenomenal. It has been estimated that in 1934, 17 million hectares of the Philippines' 30 million hectares were covered in forest (Asian Development Bank, pp. 13-14.) This figure had dropped to 10.5 million by 1969, and by 1993 it stood at 5.7 million. If one looks at old growth forests, where there is the greatest diversity of animal, plant, and insect life, then the figures are even more stark: In 1934, there were 11 million hectares of old growth forest; in 1969, 4.7 million; and by 1993, the figure had …

A Curriculum Design For A Course In Gender Issues In Development, Sheryl L. Kane
A Curriculum Design For A Course In Gender Issues In Development, Sheryl L. Kane
Master's Capstone Projects
What follows is an attempt to document the Gender Issues in Development course in an effort to give those who wish to teach it a base from which to draw upon. The teaching of the course is an organic process, in which the roots remain similar (using a feminist analysis to look at development and education, looking at the interplay between theory and practice, including traditionally marginalized voices and knowledges, and acknowledging the wealth of knowledges about the development process available from class participants) while the branches are dependent upon facilitators expertise and interests.
Having taken the course in 1991, …

The following weaknesses are in the part-time teaGhing area of the CCS Program:
- 2 to 5 new part-time teachers are hired each year
- Most part-time teachers have no college level teaching experience
- No part-time teachers with college comprehension teaching experience
- No part-time teachers with study skills teaching experience
- An annual teacher turnover with no trained replacements
- There is limited time available to train staff adequately.
I propose to research, design, and videotape 20 to 25 teacher training videos for all three developmental levels of CCS including, but not limited to, reading comprehension methods and study skills. Instructional videos are a …

Thinking About The Future: Job Opportunities - Hmong Translation, University Of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Employment & Training Institute, Mao Vang
ETI Publications
This curriculum booklet was developed for Milwaukee Public Schools by the Employment and Training Institute. Mao Vang, a UWM student, translated the guide into Hmong for use by families and students at Milwaukee Public Schools. The booklet was designed to help students and their parents use local labor market information and resources in their career planning. The economy is constantly changing because of new technology, shifting consumer demands, international developments and changing demographic trends. A "snapshot" of the labor market, based on local job openings surveys of thousands of Milwaukee area employers, is presented to help students "learn how to …

Scharp: Opening The Door To Systems Change, Leslie G. Mcbride
Scharp: Opening The Door To Systems Change, Leslie G. Mcbride
Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
The majority of policymakers, educators, and the public at large agree that public education needs reform. However, the nature and extent of changes are discussed and debated. Some promote the newest curricula, the latest teaching innovation, or the freshest administrative style (Sashkin & Egermeier, n.d). Others regard these approaches as piecemeal solutions that "tinker at the edges" of the real problem (Reigeluth, in press). The real problem, they say, is an ailing education system requiring fundamental, systemic changes through basic restructuring(Corbett, 1990; O'Neil, 1993; Reigeluth, in press; Sashkin & Egermeier,n. d.). These two approaches bracket a solution continuum ranging from minor …

This publication stresses the importance of care and feeding when foals are orphaned.
Feeding and raising orphaned foals can be an extreme challenge particularly if the foal was orphaned at birth. Losing a mare is never expected and being left with a motherless orphan can turn into an unexpected nightmare. Intensive management will optimize the foal's survival chances.

G95-1262 Feeding The Beef Cow Herd--Part Ii Managing The Feeding Program, Richard J. Rasby, Ivan G. Rush, Don C. Adams
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials
Feed costs are the cow/calf producer's greatest expense in producing a weaned calf. To remain competitive, cow/calf operators must use economical feeding programs. It is important to match the available feed resources with the nutrient requirements of the first-calf-heifer and cow. Both over- and underfeeding the cow herd can lead to high production costs.
Nutrient requirements for heifers calving as 2-year-olds and cows calving as 3-year-olds and older are shown in Table I. Beef cows are seldom fed complete rations where ingredients are weighed daily. Generally, most of a cow's ration is forages such as: 1) summer and winter range, …
