Reading Attitudes Across A Broad Age Spectrum, Edward J. Dwyer, Flora Joy Jan 1980

Reading Attitudes Across A Broad Age Spectrum, Edward J. Dwyer, Flora Joy

ETSU Faculty Works

Children with parents who demonstrate a highly positive attitude toward reading and who read to their children generally profit from instruction when they begin learning to read and also enjoy considerable success (Durkin, 1966; McCormack, 1977). On the other hand, a review of current research indicates that there is little information available which demonstrates how school-age children as well as adults say they feel about reading. Further, Zirkel and Greene (1976) suggested that "there is a paucity of verbal self-report instruments in the reading attitude assessment area" (p. 107).

Student (And Animal) Welfare, Leonard M. Krause Jan 1980

Student (And Animal) Welfare, Leonard M. Krause

EDUCATION

Adolescents exhibit affection for numerous vertebrates and appear to sympathize and to identify with traumas these animals experience. Therapeutic benefits students attach to nurturing and breeding certain vertebrates are evident; destruction of these same creatures produces clearly negative attitudes by students toward the science course and the instructor. "Case histories" documented while teaching high school students working with vertebrates are reviewed and are related to specific techniques (e.g., pithing) utilized by numerous instructors. Motivation, increased attention span, sustained interest, involvement with community issues and other desirable educational goals are demonstrated to be resultants of student involvement with living vertebrates ...

Animals In British Schools: Legal And Practical Problems, Jennifer Remfry Jan 1980

Animals In British Schools: Legal And Practical Problems, Jennifer Remfry

EDUCATION

Well-managed, healthy animals can be useful and beneficial aids to the emotional and intellectual development of young people at the primary and secondary levels of education. In Britain, vertebrate animals are not used in schools for experiments which might cause pain, distress or disease. The laws protecting animals are comprehensive but at present it is the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) which is having the most impact on the keeping of animals in British schools. The practical skills most needed by teachers are in the handling, sexing and humane killing of animals. Training of teachers should include instruction ...

Science Youth Activities And Animal Experimentation, E. G. Sherburne Jr. Jan 1980

Science Youth Activities And Animal Experimentation, E. G. Sherburne Jr.

EDUCATION

Science youth activities (extracurricular science activities) involve millions of young people at the elementary and secondary school level. Such activities are popular with young people and with teachers because they offer values different from those provided by classroom work and the required laboratory. National science youth activity programs include science fairs and the International Science and Engineering Fair, the Science Talent Search, and a number of other programs. For activities involving research, animals have been increasingly used because of the increased sophistication of the students doing the work. While some projects using vertebrates may be done poorly, it is suggested ...

Humaneness Supersedes Curiosity, F. Barbara Orlans Jan 1980

Humaneness Supersedes Curiosity, F. Barbara Orlans

EDUCATION

Ethical considerations need to be addressed with respect to educational use of animals. Society extends greater latitude in what is permissible to do to an animal in the name of science to a professional research worker than to a high school student. A balance needs to be made of the significance of the expected experimental results, on the one hand, which the ethical costs, (in terms of pain or death to the animal), on the other. A reasonable boundary can be drawn, based on ethical as well as on practical considerations, to exclude invasive procedures on vertebrate animals in high ...

Fundamental Criteria For Determining The Educational Value Of Live Animal Experimentation In High School Science Fairs, David H. Neil Jan 1980

Fundamental Criteria For Determining The Educational Value Of Live Animal Experimentation In High School Science Fairs, David H. Neil

EDUCATION

The author contends that great and very detailed attention to one minuscule facet of experimental animal biology, particularly if it requires the skilled and uniform alteration of a significant number of animals, is of no real educational value to a high school student. This type of work, the necessity for it and the full understanding of its significance to the furtherance of human understanding must be the province only of those who are intellectually prepared. The suggestion is made that projects, which develop a more complete understanding of common and profoundly important elements in life (as we know it), should ...

Rural Education Action Project, Murray Lake Jan 1980

Rural Education Action Project, Murray Lake

ECU Publications Pre. 2011

As a follow up to earlier samples of work sent out as part of the Rural Education Action Project, this booklet, through the courtesy of a metropolitan primary school principal and his staff, is forwarded in the hope that it may prove of value to schools in the assessment of levels of work attained by children. Additionally, while it is recognized that each teaching situation is different, the tests and the various analysis and recording techniques may be of some interest to teachers: In some cases, reproduction is not as clear as desired. This is a result of an attempt ...

Teaching Practice, Supervision, Advice And Assessment : A Report Of An Investigation Undertaken Under The Auspices Of The Research Committee Of Nedlands College, M. Kaplan

ECU Publications Pre. 2011

An opinion questionnaire (see Appendix One for details) was distributed to staff of the Departments of Education Studies and English Studies to identify expectations of staff in relation to teaching practice and to measure the extent to which staff views on the subject coincide. Use was made of the Delphi technique to enable respondents to modify and expand on the original questionnaire and to revise their initial responses in the light of additional information. It was felt that the Delphi technique would permit more detailed and reflective views to be obtained from staff and that this additional information would justify ...

The Delphi Technique : An Application Of The Delphi Technique As A Method Of Obtaining Staff Opinions On Issues Relating To Teaching Practice At Nedlands College Of Advanced Education, M. Kaplan

ECU Publications Pre. 2011

As one approach to gathering information required in compiling a report on Teaching Practice, Supervision Advice and Assessment (Published as Research Committee Report Number 12), use was made of the Delphi Technique. (Kaplan, 1980).

Space precluded providing details of this technique in Report Number 12 but since the technique is not often used, it was decided to provide information on its application in the study in this separate report.

The Language Of 5 1/2-Year-Old Children From Homes Where Macedonian, Vietnamese And An Aboriginal Tribal Language Are Used As The Language Of The Home, A. L. Mcgregor Jan 1980

The Language Of 5 1/2-Year-Old Children From Homes Where Macedonian, Vietnamese And An Aboriginal Tribal Language Are Used As The Language Of The Home, A. L. Mcgregor

ECU Publications Pre. 2011

Throughout the world migration patterns and changing attitudes towards education and other cultures have led over the past three or four decades to a remarkable growth in the learning of second or foreign languages. Within this area the learning of English by speakers of other languages takes up the largest numbers and is to be found in every part of the globe.

Nevertheless to date comparatively little is known of processes and patterns in second language development. Evidence on phonological and semantic development is exceedingly skimpy. Hernandez (in Ervin-Tripp 1970), Malmberg (1945), Wode (1976) and Ervin-Tripp (1974) have examined the ...

Keeping A Clozed Mind On Reading, Edward J. Dwyer Jan 1980

Keeping A Clozed Mind On Reading, Edward J. Dwyer

ETSU Faculty Works

Cloze has a rich and interesting history as a method for encouraging reading achievement as well as for use as on approach to measuring reading competence. Cloze can be used effectively in instructional programs in many ways, including ( 1) paired or small group wo;k, (222) "crossword cloze" type activities, and (3) multiple-choice type formats. The "doze informal" contains a series of graded passages which presents reading instructors with a method for matching students with appropriate instructional materials. In the "cloze informal", students' scores are obtained from performance on a series of cloze passages. Scores can be used to assess ...
