Can Education Change Society? Michael Apple’S Simple Question And Complex Answer, Connie Schaffer

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

Can education change society? The question is simple, and Michael W. Apple’s response is an irrefutable, yes. However, a broader exegesis is needed because the issues confounding this question are steeped in powerful political forces from both the right and left. Within the pages of Can Education Change Society?, Apple continues his long-time professional exposition regarding education’s role in challenging these and other hegemonic systems.

Stem On A Budget: A Basic Guide For Teaching Stem In Ops Afterschool Programs, Tyrome Williams

Criss Library Faculty Publications

This guide was written with the goal of providing a rough lesson plan, which could act as a supplemental guide for sustainable activities at sites in the Omaha area to better serve their students and children. The STEM lessons I chose in this book are engaging, hold education value, and are cost effective if used properly. This book contains valuable information to supplement STEM learning. Whether you’re a teacher, instructor, supervisor for children, or a substitute; you will always be the most valuable asset in your classroom. This is a free use document and should not be sold for ...

Biology Faculty Publications

Afterschool interventions in STEM are linked to learning gains during the school day. These opportunities engage and excite students about STEM concepts since they observe a more hands-on, project-oriented approach. Often these opportunities for afterschool interventions are infrequent in nature and leave gaps for students in their maturation and understanding. Herein we describe the first report of an afterschool intervention, named NE STEM 4U, targeting socioeconomically disadvantaged middle school youth via a twice weekly, year-long intervention, studied across two years. We assessed the impact of this program on i.) short-term, individual student gains in STEM content knowledge and ii.) delivery ...

A Textbook Program Is Not For Us: Re-Imagining Failure Into New Possibilities, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens Oct 2018

A Textbook Program Is Not For Us: Re-Imagining Failure Into New Possibilities, Heidi Blackburn, Tammi Owens

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Sometimes, despite all our efforts, projects fail. We’re here to tell you that’s okay. Last year, we came to NLA to report about the creation of our textbook pilot project. What we didn’t share was that we weren’t sure it would work out. We were optimistic, though. After all, we had plenty of evidence that said it would work: our literature review had examples of successful textbook programs. Our data showed textbook prices rising. We met with advisors across our campus who said students desperately needed textbooks to succeed. We had buy-in from library administrators, the ...

The Status Of Women In Stem In Higher Education: A Literature Review 2007-2017, Heidi Blackburn, Tarun Chaturvedi

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Use Google to search “Women in STEM in higher education” and see what comes up. What if you were an administrator trying to write a grant to recruit female students in IT? Or an instructor trying to advise a student club for women in computer science? In recent years, the spotlight on STEM education has given rise to hundreds of studies ranging from the recruitment and retention of women students to the workplace climate of women faculty and staff. This information was not easily available in one location for use in reports, press releases, curriculum, or grants. Through a Carnegie-Whitney ...

Making Room For Moms: Advocating For A Lactation Space In The Library, Heidi Blackburn, Joyce Neujahr Sep 2018

Making Room For Moms: Advocating For A Lactation Space In The Library, Heidi Blackburn, Joyce Neujahr

Criss Library Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Women make up 80% of the library workplace and 56% of the student body population in higher education (Department of Education, 2017). They make up 53% of the faculty, staff, and administration in public universities in the United States (Chronicle of Higher Education, 2017). Yet, it was easy for us to overlook a smaller, specific population: How was our organization serving moms? The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Criss Library staff saw a need within our own work place for employees, which opened our eyes to a larger problem for patrons: a lactation space. Where could new mothers go ...

The buildings in which people work, live, and spend their leisure time are increasingly embedded with sophisticated information technology (IT). This article describes the approach of Metropolitan Community College (MCC) in Omaha, Nebraska of the United States to provide an occupational context to some of their IT coursework by organizing IT instruction around the context of building automation systems (BAS). This contextualization allows IT students not only to study IT as a standalone discipline but also to study its integrated use within a specific occupational context. The article also describes MCC’s focused curriculum design efforts funded by the National ...

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

In June and July, 2018, the Nebraska Department of Education invited teachers and administrators to provide feedback on the Nebraska Social Studies Standards. Nebraska educators provided input by participating in eight focus groups intended to complement a previous survey of Nebraska’s elementary and secondary social studies teachers. Individuals submitted written input if they were not able to participate in a scheduled focus group. The information gathered from the focus group participants offered opportunity to: 1) develop insights and a deeper understanding regarding K-12 educator perceptions of the current Nebraska Social Studies Standards and 2) solicit input for the upcoming ...

Don’T Wait For Them To Come To You: Partnering With Student Support Services, Katie Bishop

Criss Library Faculty Publications

AT ANY INSTITUTION a positive culture is a critical element in overall organizational effectiveness. In my four years at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Libraries I have seen the transition of a dean, an associate dean, two directors, and multiple faculty and staff. Notwithstanding this turnover, the library staff members have successfully come together to create a new student- centered, inclusive, and engaged library culture. Many factors went into this change, and the leadership turnover actually served to strengthen our library organizational model into one that is more open and communicative. However, the culture changes in my unit ...

The Effect Of Elaborative Interrogation On The Synthesis Of Ideas From Multiple Sources Of Information, Omer Farooq

Criss Library Faculty Publications

The new Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (ACRL, 2016) highlights the ability to synthesize ideas from multiple sources of information as one of the key knowledge practices as students navigate an increasingly complex information landscape. With the introduction of this new document, there is a strong need for evidence-based guidance for information literacy instruction in academic libraries. There is little generalizable empirical research based on cognitive science principles to guide information literacy instruction practice. The present study examined the effectiveness of elaborative interrogation instructional strategy on integration and transformation of ideas from multiple sources of information. 86 participants ...
