Model Misspecification And Assumption Violations With The Linear Mixed Model: A Meta-Analysis, Brandon Lebeau, Yoon Ah Song, Wei Cheng Liu

This meta analysis attempts to synthesize the Monte Carlo literature for the linear mixed model under a longitudinal framework. The empirical type I error rate will serve as the effect size and Monte Carlo simulation conditions will be coded to serve as moderator variables. The type I error rate for the fixed and random effects will be explored as the primary dependent variable. Effect sizes were coded from 13 studies, resulting in a total of 4,002 and 621 effect sizes for fixed and random effects. BACKGROUND: Sedentary work is hazardous. Over 80% of all US jobs are predominantly sedentary, placing full-time office workers at increased risk for cardiovascular and metabolic morbidity and mortality. Thus, there is a critical need for effective workplace physical activity interventions. MapTrek is a mobile health platform that gamifies Fitbit use for the purpose of promoting physical activity. The purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of MapTrek for increasing daily steps and moderate-intensity steps over 10 weeks in a sample of sedentary office workers.

The linear mixed model is a commonly used model for longitudinal or nested data due to its ability to account for the dependency of nested data. Researchers typically rely on the random effects to adequately account for the dependency due to correlated data, however serial correlation can also be used. If the random effect structure is misspecified (perhaps due to convergence problems), can the addition of serial correlation overcome this misspecification and allow for unbiased estimation and accurate inferences? Many librarians in higher education are expected to engage in classroom teaching, but receive little training in learning theories, instructional techniques, and instructional technologies. It is widely assumed throughout the literature that LIS programs do not offer much coursework in instruction, and if they do, it is a very small portion of the curriculum. As sociologists Bruno Latour and Steven Woolgar noted several decades ago, science is a literary enterprise, in which the unit of credit is the paper, and research communities collaborate and recognize each others' work internationally via journal-published papers. Papers, in turn, are parlayed into research grants, which sustain laboratories, graduate education, and research careers. But although careers in STEM require sophisticated reading and writing skills, STEM students generally begin graduate school with little writing training beyond rudimentary lab-report writing and one or two undergraduate courses in rhetoric and composition. This 5-week module is designed to be embedded within an undergraduate seminar, to teach information literacy and critical thinking skills aligned with the ACRL Framework for information literacy. Undergraduate students are a diverse body made up of the traditional middle class American high-school graduate, as well as adult learners, first-generation students, veterans, and international students.
