X-Ray Spectra Reveal The Reawakening Of The Repeat Changing-Look Agn Ngc 1566, Dirk Grupe

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

We present simultaneous XMM–Newton and NuSTAR observations of the repeat changing-look AGN NGC 1566, which dramatically increased in brightness in the IR to X-ray bands in 2018. The broad-band X-ray spectrum was taken at the peak of the outburst and is typical of Seyfert 1 AGN. The spectrum shows a soft excess, Compton hump, warm absorption and reflection, ruling out tidal disruption as the cause of the outburst and demonstrating that a ‘standard’ accretion disk can develop very rapidly. The high-resolution grating spectrum reveals that the outburst has launched a ∼500 km s−1 outflow, and shows photoionized emission lines from …

Proficient Or Deficient? Pre-Service Elementary Teachers' Social Studies Content Knowledge In The Era Of Nclb, Kimberlee Anne Sharp, Kimberely Fletcher Nettleson Oct 2018

Proficient Or Deficient? Pre-Service Elementary Teachers' Social Studies Content Knowledge In The Era Of Nclb, Kimberlee Anne Sharp, Kimberely Fletcher Nettleson

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Millennial generation pre-service teachers enrolled in undergraduate social studies methods courses are largely the products of NCLB and the concomitant marginalization of social studies during their K-12 education experience. This study examined a sample (N=136) of pre-service elementary teachers’ entry-point social studies content knowledge strengths and weaknesses over a three-year time frame and the degree to which NCLB era K-12 content standards had an impact on pre-service teachers’ entry-point content knowledge scores. The unintended consequences of NCLB on pre-service elementary teachers’ social studies content knowledge and recommendations for intervention and continuous improvement are presented in this paper.

Automation Of Air Traffic Management Using Fuzzy Logic Algorithm To Integrate Unmanned Aerial Systems Into The National Airspace, Kouroush Jenab, Joseph Pineau Oct 2018

Automation Of Air Traffic Management Using Fuzzy Logic Algorithm To Integrate Unmanned Aerial Systems Into The National Airspace, Kouroush Jenab, Joseph Pineau

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have been increasing in popularity in personal, commercial, and military applications. The increase of the use of UAS poses a significant risk to general air travel, and will burden an already overburdened Air Traffic Control (ATC) network if the Air Traffic Management (ATM) system does not undergo a revolutionary change. Already there have been many near misses reported in the news with personal hobbyist UAS flying in controlled airspace near airports almost colliding with manned aircraft. The expected increase in the use of UAS over the upcoming years will exacerbate this problem, leading to a catastrophic …

Projected Economic And Financial Benefits Of The 2017 Summer Universiade Games., Steve S. Chen, Teame Ghirmay, Yi-Hua Lee, Chie-Der Dongfan, Tsung-Chih Chiu

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

In Western society, sport economic impact studies are often utilized to showcase the financial benefits for hosting mega sport event or to justify the spending for entering bids or covering infrastructure construction costs. This study projected economic impact of the 2017 Summer Universiade by examining the Taiwanese (the hosting country) residents’ willingness to attendance and estimated individual spending (consumption) while attending the games. Through a series of convenience sampling surveys from February to April, 2017, 1,021 respondents (53.5% males and 45.3% females) reported their potential personal spending, willingness to attend the events, and preferred ticket price range. The results indicated …

Perceived Athletic And Academic Stressors And Time Management Of Student-Athletes, Steve S. Chen, Amanda Miller, Tsung-Chin Chiu Apr 2018

Perceived Athletic And Academic Stressors And Time Management Of Student-Athletes, Steve S. Chen, Amanda Miller, Tsung-Chin Chiu

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

A typical National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division-I affiliated member institution provides support to at least seven men’s and women’s sports that sustains over 300 student-athletes. These student-athletes perform both on and off the court on a daily basis while completing their homework and studying for tests just like non-athlete students. Furthermore, they participate in practices, compete in games, lift weights, attend team meetings, and manage injuries. Although faculty members are aware of the demands placed on college athletes, it’s unclear if they understand the magnitude of the challenges and pressure college athletes have experienced outside of the classroom.

The Perfect Body: A Potential Pathway Of Anorexic Symptom Development In Women, Timothy S. Thornberry, Nicholas Dawson Mar 2018

The Perfect Body: A Potential Pathway Of Anorexic Symptom Development In Women, Timothy S. Thornberry, Nicholas Dawson

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Several variables have been related to anorexic symptoms, including socially prescribed perfectionism (SPP), thin ideal internalization (TII), and body dissatisfaction (BD). We sought to extend a previous model of bulimic symptom development to anorexic symptom development. An online survey collected data from 114 predominantly European American undergraduate women attending a Southeastern university. First, we determined whether SPP predicted anorexic symptoms and whether this relationship was mediated by BD. The analyses revealed that SPP predicted anorexic symptoms, b = .04, t(114) = 2.41, p = .018. BD was found to mediate this relationship, indirect effect = .02, 95% bias-corrected CI [.01, …

Independence And Domination On Shogiboard Graphs, Doug Chatham Jan 2018

Independence And Domination On Shogiboard Graphs, Doug Chatham

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Given a (symmetrically-moving) piece from a chesslike game, such as shogi, and an n × n board, we can form a graph with a vertex for each square and an edge between two vertices if the piece can move from one vertex to the other. We consider two pieces from shogi: the dragon king, which moves like a rook and king from chess, and the dragon horse, which moves like a bishop and rook from chess. We show that the independence number for the dragon kings graph equals the independence number for the queens graph. We show that the (independent) …

Teamwork From The Golden-Age Pirates: Could This Strategy Work In Today’S Contemporary Sports Setting?, Steve S. Chen, Eric Street

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The focus of this paper encompasses the contemporary teamwork and coaching philosophy in today’s sport setting. The authors compare and contrast the modern philosophy to the beliefs of Golden Age Pirates. Our effort is to determine whether the 17th century pirates’ teamwork and leadership philosophy could still be successfully transitioned and utilized in modern sports today. Could this ancient system, developed in the 17th century, have any value in 21st century teamwork building and coaching? In this paper, the authors first reiterate the modern leadership principles and importance of the leadership role to the critical success of an organization and …

A Petri Net Based Reliability Block Diagram Model For Category I Medical Devices Reliability Analysis, Kouroush Jenab Jan 2018

A Petri Net Based Reliability Block Diagram Model For Category I Medical Devices Reliability Analysis, Kouroush Jenab

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

The medical industry incorporates technology and breaks different types of equipment into three various categories determined according to the technologies and their usage. The first category, which is the focus of this article, consists of devices that are directly linked to the life of the patients, for example a ventilator. The purpose of this study is to develop a new reliability technique, based on the Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) and Petri Net, for Category 1 equipment. The RBD, focuses on showing how the failure of different parts could affect the sub-systems of the equipment and how those failures could cause …

Picking Pedagogical Practices Students Prefer: An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Teaching Tools In Face-To-Face Versus Online Delivery, Bruce K. Grace, Kenneth Henderson, Barbara Lyons Jan 2018

Picking Pedagogical Practices Students Prefer: An Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Teaching Tools In Face-To-Face Versus Online Delivery, Bruce K. Grace, Kenneth Henderson, Barbara Lyons

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

This study explores graduate student perceptions of fourteen commonly used teaching methods. Convenience samples were drawn from a university exclusively delivering its MBA program via the Internet and a university providing traditional face-to-face classroom instruction. Overall, no significant preference differences were found for nine of the fourteen pedagogical methods. Students enrolled in online classes perceive textbooks, tutorials, and Internet activities as significantly more effective in helping them achieve their educational goals than students enrolled in face-to-face classes. Students enrolled in face-to-face classes rated guest speakers and team presentations as more effective learning tools than their online counterparts. The perceived comparative …

Increasing Physical Activity Using An Ecological Model, Gina B. Gonzalez, Kristi M. King Jan 2018

Increasing Physical Activity Using An Ecological Model, Gina B. Gonzalez, Kristi M. King

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

Increasing the proportion of adults in the United States (U.S.) who engage in physical activity is a national priority. Only 29% met the aerobic guideline, 3% met the muscle strengthening guideline only, and 21% met the guidelines for both aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity. Individually oriented physical activity interventions can be intensive and have large effects; however, changes may be temporary unless supportive environments and health-promoting policies are in place. A variety of strategies are required to get and keep people physically active.

Reflections On The N+K Dragon Kings Problem, Richard D. Chatham Jan 2018

Reflections On The N+K Dragon Kings Problem, Richard D. Chatham

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

A dragon king is a shogi piece that moves any number of squares vertically or horizontally or one square diagonally but does not move through or jump over other pieces. We construct infinite families of solutions to the n + k dragon kings problem of placing k pawns and n + k mutually nonattacking dragon kings on an n+n board, including solutions symmetric with respect to quarter-turn or half-turn rotations, solutions symmetric with respect to one or two diagonal reflections, and solutions not symmetric with respect to any nontrivial rotation or reflection. We show that an n + k dragon …

Some Results For Chessboard Separation Problems, Richard D. Chatham, Paul A. Burchett

Faculty Research at Morehead State University

For a chessboard graph and a given graph parameter π, a π separation number is the minimum number of pawns for which some arrangement of those pawns on the board will produce a board where π has some desired value. We extend previous results on independence and domination separation. We also consider separation of other domination-related parameters.
