The Personal Is Archival: Researching And Teaching With Stories Of Women Engineers, Scientists, And Doctors, Amy Bix

Personal stories from archives are essential to understand the historical gendering of American science, medicine, technology, and innovation. Advocates promoted science, medicine, and engineering to young men, yet the twentieth-century brought increasing numbers of women into STEM education and employment. This paper illustrates the above by offering guidance to key archival and digital collections that show how women (individually and as groups) made places for themselves in modern science, technology, and medicine. Sources illustrate complex intersections for women simultaneously shaping professional and personal identities. Investigating The Effectiveness Of Case Studies In Improving Student Learning In A 200-Level Anatomy Course, Jenifer Saldanha, Karri Haen

Case studies have been established as an effective teaching tool in a number of disciplines, including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. They encourage team work, constructive thinking and the application of concepts in the classroom. In this study we investigated the effectiveness of case studies in a 200- level anatomy course that employs the large lecture format of instruction. The results from this study improve our understanding on the usefulness of this approach, and also inform the future utilization of case studies in similar classes.

Lab components of undergraduate science courses typically have students complete highly directed cookbook-like laboratory activities. These experiences rarely engage students in a meaningful manner and do not accurately convey what the work of science entails. With funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), we have created more authentic science research experiences in a variety of undergraduate science courses, including introductory courses. This paper presents the evaluation of a program designed to improve transfer outcomes for community college students pursuing an engineering degree. The program, the Engineering Admissions Partnership Program (E-APP), was designed to improve the navigational success of community college transfer students through connections to the university. These connections include coordinated academic advising, peer-mentoring, campus visits, and online social and professional networks. The objective of the study is to determine the efficacy of the E-APP and its interventions, which will be measured by increased participation rates and increased university retention rates for E-APP participants. Research into attitudes in science focuses largely on determining if certain instruction methods affect student attitude and there is a broad range of opinions as to what attitude means and how to study it. We have analyzed the attitude of students enrolled into two introductory geology classes with the goal to test if demographic factors and success in the class play a significant role in determining students attitude towards science and learning science.
