Investigating The Effectiveness Of Case Studies In Improving Student Learning In A 200-Level Anatomy Course, Jenifer Saldanha, Karri Haen

Case studies have been established as an effective teaching tool in a number of disciplines, including science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. They encourage team work, constructive thinking and the application of concepts in the classroom. In this study we investigated the effectiveness of case studies in a 200- level anatomy course that employs the large lecture format of instruction. The results from this study improve our understanding on the usefulness of this approach, and also inform the future utilization of case studies in similar classes.

Lab components of undergraduate science courses typically have students complete highly directed cookbook-like laboratory activities. These experiences rarely engage students in a meaningful manner and do not accurately convey what the work of science entails. With funding from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), we have created more authentic science research experiences in a variety of undergraduate science courses, including introductory courses. Achieving this among the diversity of freshmen and sophomore science courses—each typically serving hundreds of students on our campus—required careful planning and adaptation. Results from the Volcanic Concept Survey (VCS) indicated that many undergraduates do not fully understand volcanic systems and plate tectonics. During the 2006 academic year, a ten-item conceptual survey was distributed to undergraduate students enrolled in Earth science courses at five U.S. colleges and universities. A trained team of graders scored 672 completed surveys, coding responses to each item with a score, out of 3, based on accuracy and comprehensiveness. Research into attitudes in science focuses largely on determining if certain instruction methods affect student attitude and there is a broad range of opinions as to what attitude means and how to study it. We have analyzed the attitude of students enrolled into two introductory geology classes with the goal to test if demographic factors and success in the class play a significant role in determining students attitude towards science and learning science.
