Previous research has documented that preservice teachers (PSTs) struggle with under- standing fraction concepts and operations, and misconceptions often stem from their understanding of the referent whole. This study expands research on PSTs’ understanding of wholes by investigating pictorial strategies that 85 PSTs constructed for a multistep fraction task in a multiplicative context. The results show that many PSTs were able to construct valid pictorial strategies, and the strategies were widely diverse with respect to how they made sense of an unknown referent whole of a fraction in multiple steps, how they represented the wholes in their drawings, in which …

Kenya Quaker Secondary School Peace Curriculum Pilot Project: Examining The Role Of The Principal In The Successes And Challenges Of The Implementation, Eloise Hockett

This qualitative study examined the implementation of a peace curriculum for Kenyan Quaker secondary schools. Fourteen schools were selected for this study 1 year after school leaders attended specific training sessions. On site visits were made to 12 of the 14 schools selected for this study, and interviews conducted with the remaining principals. Schools were ranked on their level of implementation at low, medium, or high. Results indicated that 12 of the 14 schools implemented the curriculum at a medium or high level. Additional findings note the leadership of the principal was key in the overall peace curriculum implementation and …

This dissertation reports the results of a teaching experiment, which explored student thinking about integer addition and subtraction. Through the lens of commognitive theory (Sfard, 2008), interpreting negative integers as secondary intuitions (Fischbein, 1987), and employing teaching experiment methodology (Steffe & Thompson, 2000), this study was a first step in developing more robust descriptions of students’ conceptual models for integer addition and subtraction. I investigated: (a) the conceptual models that students exhibited, (b) the various ways that students utilized conceptual models while learning about the addition and subtraction of integers, and (c), the ways that students’ conceptions evolved over the …

This study aimed to see how teacher implementation of a student-led discussion process influenced intrinsic motivation of students in a high school Language Arts classroom. There was a specific focus on how these discussions impacted the students’ critical thinking. A pre and post-survey, student journals, videos of discussions, and interviews were used to collect data regarding motivation and critical thought. The study verified prior research regarding student discussions as a useful tool in classrooms if implemented in an effective way. However, there were no new conclusions reached. The safety of foster children and youth is the primary concern of the Department of Human Services. Yet, not all certified foster care homes offer the safety children need. This article reports the findings of a phenomenological study of foster youth reporting maltreatment occurring at the hands of foster parents. With a scarcity of studies on the abuse occurring at the hands of foster care providers, this study offers an important glimpse into the realities of life in care. Through in-depth interviews, this study reveals the harm perpetrated by foster care providers and the probable connection between maltreatment in care …

Machine Learning via Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) is often introduced in a one-semester course on Artificial Intelligence. Baseball’s annual Hall of Fame election provides a simple, tractable, data-rich domain for learning how to use ANNs for predictive analytics. We describe how we use the Fast Artificial Neural Network (FANN) toolkit for a course assignment that predicts which players are likely to be elected to Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

For the past decade or so, I have created primary document readers for my class using copyright-permitted documents or documents where the author has granted permission for educational purposes. These would usually be about 200-300 pages. I would send them to the copy center for binding and then these would be sold in the bookstore to the students. The cost to the student was about $15-20.

There were three issues that were of concern. First, these books were not too expensive, but I was exploring ways to move the sourcebooks online so the students did not have this cost. Also, …

Ninety-eight elementary and middle school preservice teachers posed eight stories for integer addition and subtraction number sentences. Stories that were posed about temperature were analysed using a modified Marthe‘s (1979) framework for integer problem types. This framework was modified based on the stories provided by the preservice teachers. This paper reports on the problem types utilized by the preservice teachers. Results highlight that preservice teachers do not frequently use some problem types. Also, results may indicate that some number sentence types (e.g., -23 – -5=☐) support different problem types (e.g., State-State-Translation).

intent of this exploratory, descriptive narrative inquiry was to understand the experiences of selected evangelicals serving as public school administrators who lead in the midst of skirmishes involving evangelical Christians and the local public schools where they serve. These conflicts are part of the larger cultural conflict between evangelical Christianity and public education. The narratives of five leaders were captured through semi-structured, in-depth interviews. The purposeful sample of participants included administrators from Texas, Southern California, and the South, the Midwest, and the Pacific Northwest. A unique co-teaching partnership with professional development was created with two local high schools and a university teacher education program. The model was implemented to strengthen teacher candidate practicum experience and inservice teacher development. Three themes emerged from the design-based research: classroom climate, lesson planning/implementation/assessment, and differentiation. As a result of the co-teaching model with professional development, teacher candidates perceived increased support and guidance on all aspects of classroom practice. Cooperating teachers deepened their own understanding of teaching and learning in the classroom. High school students in co-taught classrooms reported positive classroom climate, increased engagement, individualized instruction, and feedback. Overall, …

A discussion group met and discussed the current state of research in the domain of integers at the joint PME 38 and PME-NA 36 meetings (Bofferding, Wessman- Enzinger, Gallardo, Salinas, & Peled, 2014). During these meetings productive discussion revolved around what it meant to understand integers. Additionally, the organisers presented a literature review of the research on integers from all of the PME and PME-NA proceedings, which the group discussed. At the conclusion of this meeting, the group expressed interest in investigating integers further together by pursuing an international curriculum comparison study. Increasing numbers of English Language Learners (ELLs) in the U.S. classrooms have prioritized to building quality teacher education programs so that all teachers have the tools necessary to support their students. National, state, and local mandates have also enacted certain requirements to ensure that ELLs are receiving quality instruction with the new language proficiency and content standards. Alice, a fifth grader who participated in twelve weeks of a teaching experiment on integer addition and subtraction, produced drawings as part of her strategy for solving integer addition and subtraction open number sentences. The drawings she created during the twelve weeks of the teaching experiment were analyzed and grouped into the following categories: Single Set of Objects, Double Set of Objects, Number Paths & Number Lines, and Number Sentences. These drawings provide insight into how children may directly model or count when solving integer addition and subtraction problems.

Barriers To Academic Achievement For Foster Youth: The Story Behind The Statistics, Brenda Morton

The purpose of this qualitative research study was to explore the perceptions of former and current foster youth about the barriers they encountered during their K-12 education, and to learn how they overcame these obstacles and achieved academic success. The study included in-depth interviews of 11 participants, all of whom were current or former foster youth who were enrolled or had plans to enroll in a community college or 4-year university. The results of this study indicated that previously identified barriers to academic achievement were true for this group of participants, but that these topics or themes represented the effects …
