School administrators face intensifying work demands and increased scrutiny. The role is challenging and isolating. For women, minorities, rural school leaders, and those new to administration, there are additional challenges to face.
It is essential for those shaping programs to prepare future school administrators and support leaders in the field to have a thorough understanding of the many challenges that can make it difficult for school leaders to simply survive, let alone thrive. Some challenges are common to nearly all school leaders, but challenges unique to individual leaders are shaped by circumstance, personal characteristics, and choices made along the way. …

The purpose of this article is to share wisdom collected from the field and offer a view of meaningful learning, explore the tensions that exist in educators’ work, and invite conversation about the future of educational practice. The anecdotes and data come from a series of research studies conducted from 2001 to 2011 by a cadre of middle grades researchers— university faculty from public and private universities across Oregon. This NCPEA Position Paper articulates a national perspective for the development of teacher leadership programs with leadership from educational administration professors. The National Council of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA), as the professional organization that provides direction and leadership for its members, presents a vision for dialogue and action to collaboratively develop teacher leadership programs among professors of educational administration and teacher education faculty. We believe that leadership matters and thus we submit there is a sense of urgency for professors to collaboratively develop teacher leadership programs embedded within educational administration programs. This paper will share the results of a research study conducted during the 2007-2008 school year. It was designed to tell the stories of selected Oregon high schools that were having some success in implementing innovations and practices, and were making a difference in student’s learning, meeting content standards, and feeling connections to their schools. Interviews were conducted with students, teachers, and administrators to gain their perspectives of what was “working” at their high school. Additional data was collected from surveys, focus groups, artifacts, and researcher reflections. An analysis of the data revealed three overarching themes—what’s best for kids, community, …

An Administrator’S Challenge: Encouraging Teachers To Be Leaders, Ginny Birky, Scot Headley, Marc Shelton

This article examines how high school administrators influence teacher leadership in both positive and negative ways, particularly in an educational reform environment. It specifically looks at how they encourage, discourage, and motivate involvement in teacher leadership activities. Data from two studies were collected from teacher leaders through individual interviews and multiple surveys. The findings provide additional evidence that when teacher leaders function within a collaborative leadership model, teachers find more meaning and are motivated to continue in their leadership roles.
