For The Culture: The Importance Of A Critical Social Theory Within The Music Education Classroom, Brianna Thomas Apr 2019

For The Culture: The Importance Of A Critical Social Theory Within The Music Education Classroom, Brianna Thomas

Senior Honors Theses

This paper will analyze the history of music education in the United States and discuss how the music classroom can contribute to and dismantle social inequalities including social class, gender, and race. Class effects music education by creating barriers to necessary resources and opportunities as a result of economic positions.[1] Gender is the second focus because music has historically been a male-dominated profession. A Model Of The Process African American Adolescents Use To Integrate Their Bilingual Identity With Their Overall Identity In A Foreign Language Immersion Environment: A Grounded Theory Study, Kim Romero Jun 2018

A Model Of The Process African American Adolescents Use To Integrate Their Bilingual Identity With Their Overall Identity In A Foreign Language Immersion Environment: A Grounded Theory Study, Kim Romero

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this grounded theory study was to develop a model that illustrates how African American adolescents in a foreign language immersion environment integrate their bilingual identity with their overall identity. For this study, bilingualism is defined as the ability to use two languages for academic and/or business purposes. I used multiple interviews, focus groups, questionnaires, and journals to collect data. The most important part of the identity integration process for African American adolescents in a foreign language immersion environment is choice. The loss of choice caused conflicts during the identity negotiation process. The participants perceived their bilingual ...

Into The Storm: Ecological And Sociological Impediments To Black Males’ Persistence In Engineering Graduate Programs, Brian A. Burt, Krystal L. Williams, William A. Smith Apr 2018

Into The Storm: Ecological And Sociological Impediments To Black Males’ Persistence In Engineering Graduate Programs, Brian A. Burt, Krystal L. Williams, William A. Smith

Education Publications

While much is known about how Black students negotiate and navigate undergraduate studies, there is a dearth of research on what happens when these students enter graduate school. This article presents the results of a study of 21 Black male graduate students in engineering from one highly ranked research-intensive institution. This article provides evidence of structurally racialized policies within the engineering college (e.g., admissions) and racialized and gendered interactions with peers and advisors that threaten Black males’ persistence in engineering. We argue for taking an anti-deficit approach to understanding Black males’ persistence in engineering. We conclude with implications for ...

Books Or Baskets: Compromising The Education And Future Of Black Student-Athletes, Jessica L. Laemle Apr 2018

Books Or Baskets: Compromising The Education And Future Of Black Student-Athletes, Jessica L. Laemle

Student Publications

In this paper, I discuss the challenges and inequalities that Black male athletes face while playing college sports, particularly basketball and football at PWIs. I explore how this focus on sports pushes these individuals to focus on athletics rather than academics, as they are there on scholarships and are focused primarily on representing their schools and becoming professional athletes. I discuss multiple factors that play into these student-athletes' idea that athletics are more important than academics. Using multiple studies, I give information and statistics on the outcomes of these athletes. I also provide limitations of the studies I use so ...
