In this session, participants will discuss successful (and maybe not so successful) faculty development programs and activities. We will provide participants with some examples of building relationships with faculty early on, and how to demonstrate to faculty that the grants/sponsored programs offices are on “their” side. We will also discuss and share ideas of celebrating faculty scholarship, proposal submission and external awards.

Many students enter college lacking the necessary research and critical thinking skills needed for academic success. A strong body of literature shows evidence that information literacy instruction at the secondary level enhances college readiness in freshman students. The authors discuss the importance of collaborative curriculum development and the role academic libraries play in supporting college readiness. The research will review and cite successful high school and college partnerships, curriculum development initiatives, secondary information literacy instruction, and teacher professional development. The utilization of select library databases as a tool to promote college readiness is also discussed.

As shown below, the cost of higher education in Michigan compares unfavorable to the rest of the nation. In order to remain viable in an age of worldwide competition for students, WMU (and more specifically SPAA) will need to identify marketable areas of competitive advantage as well as opportunities for programmatic improvement.

When George Fox’s Department of Professional Studies offered four online courses in the summer of 2010, the faculty did not know what would come of the experiment. Six years later, the department now offers more than 25 online classes per semester, including one online major, and the program is growing. The majority of DPS students juggle families and full-time work in addition to school, and increasingly students are seeking the convenience of online offerings for both required major and general education courses. Nearly 5 billion people around the world lack basic internet access, putting them at a severe disadvantage in terms of economic, educational, health, and social opportunity. While a number of providers are attempting to address this global digital divide, our panel will explore a collaborative effort to bridge this divide using several low-cost technological solutions, offering enormous potential for reaching the developing world. We will discuss our experiences using Outernet, Keepod, and RACHEL (Remote Area Community Hotspot for Education & Learning).
