Using Learning Objects To Enhance Distance Or Blended Learning, Susan A. Ariew, Maryellen Allen

The USF Tampa Library has been creating learning objects to enhance instruction and reference since YouTube came into its own in 2006. Over that period of time, the need for more expertise in creating quality learning objects that can be embedded in course management systems or on the library web site created a shift in priorities and leadership. In 2012 the USF Library hired an Assistant Director for Instruction and a Blended Librarian to provide a new direction for the instruction program, one that would include more online learning components. Language And Literacy Of Pre-Adolescent/Adolescent Bilingual Students: Current Research, Alejandro E. Brice

It is well documented that pre-adolescent and adolescent English learners (ELs) are at-risk for reading difficulties (Escamilla, Chavez, & Vigil, 2005; Lopez, 2009; Hemphill, Vanneman & Rahman, 2011; Snow, Burns & Griffin, 1998; Waxman, Padrón, Shin, & Rivera, 2008). Kohler and Lazarín (2007) stated, nationally only 29% of EL 8th grade students scored at or above the basic reading achievement levels. In comparison, nationally the non-EL 8th grade students scored at 75% at or above the basic reading achievement levels. In addition, the achievement gap among English learning (EL) students has existed and continues to exist. Unfortunately, this gap widens …

This workshop looks at two technologies that can be used to energize traditional poster and writing assignments to bring them beyond text: Glogster and Blogger. Both are free, easy to use websites with which students can create web pages with images, text, and audio to share with their classmates and the world. In the workshop, intended for instructors and curriculum coordinators, we will look at each of these platforms, discuss examples of project assignment guides using each of the sites, and talk about other ways they could be integrated into courses. Providing opportunities for conversation practice is one way that an IEP can help students improve their English as well as enhance their engagement in the language learning process. However, matching individual language learners to fluent English speakers can be difficult and time consuming. This workshop will introduce participants involved in setting up such interactions to Ning, a free online social networking platform which can facilitate the creation of individualized networks. Participants will gain insights into how one IEP used Ning to connect ELLs to university students interested in having conversation partners.

An outreach blog can be an effective communication tool that extends and enhances email, listservs, and other traditional forms of correspondence in colleges and universities. At this presentation find out how USF Librarians have used blogging technologies to connect with specific faculty constituencies and to the community at large. Unlike traditional communication tools, blogs offer powerful organizational features that help users to keep abreast of library-related information and updates. Presenters will offer blogging tips and tools tied to questions of content, design, Google gadgets and library 2.0 features. In addition, presenters featured academic library outreach blogs that illustrated best practices.
