In Search Of Aesthetic Space: Delaying Intentionality In Teaching/Learning Situations, Margaret A. Macintyre Latta
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
Aesthetic considerations are qualitative, personal, and value laden and do not fi t well into existing educational frameworks. Yet, I think greater aesthetic awareness is a pragmatic and philosophical necessity missing in much schooling. An aesthetic context calls for a rethinking and revaluing of what is educationally important. Th is paper explores such possibilities along with the concrete implications of taking aesthetic considerations seriously, within a school setting. Opened in September, 1997, the Creative Arts Centre, Milton Williams School, Calgary Board of Education, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, has chosen to value the creating process, primary to the arts, within the school …

Taking “Stock” Of Pedagogical Content Knowledge In Science Education, Harcharan Pardhan, Alan Wheeler
Institute for Educational Development, Karachi
This article focuses on efforts of facilitate the development of MEd science students' conceptual understanding of content, pedagogy and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). A basic premise of the approach taken was that to teach conceptually, students must learn conceptually. A four-step conceptual process was followed with the participants to help them actively construct knowledge about fundamental science concepts and enhance their confidence and enthusiasm for science teaching. Equivalent forms of an assessment instrument entitled the Science Test of Content Knowledge (STOCK), used as per- and post-performance measures, revealed a significant difference. The article describes the structured activities built into the …

Occasional Paper No. 72
The present report originated in a MSU policy analysis class taught during 1996. The professor and students agreed to construct a class that represented a grounded experience in policy analysis touching upon a current and relevant issue. We began exploring the policies surrounding the education of migrant children in Michigan.
Our goal was to learn about the policies related to the of education of migrant workers’ children and to develop an understanding of the issue’s complexities. We knew our work would be limited by time, financial, and political constraints. These constraints limited our work to an …

Clags's Queer Pedagogy Workshops, Spring 2000, James Wilson
Center for LGBTQ Studies (CLAGS)
As a former high school English teacher and now a prospective college professor, I have long grappled with issues of gender and sexuality in the classroom. Is it, for example, incumbent upon me to be both a model and mentor for my Igbtq students? How will the classroom dynamic change if my private experiences become inextricably linked with my professional responsibilities? To what end might I implement issues regarding gender and sexuality while teaching canonical texts or traditional academic subjects? And finally, how would I handle homophobia, students coming out, and questions about my personal life in the context of …

Learning In Deed: Service-Learning And Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson
Service Learning, General
Progressive teacher education programs face a pair of daunting yet crucial tasks. New teachers must be prepared to function effectively in schools as they exist today. They also must be educated to take a leadership role in the improvement and restructuring of P-12 education to meet students’ and society’s needs more fully. Service-learning appears to have considerable potential as a method to achieve both these goals.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation believes that meaningful service to the community, combined with curriculum-based learning, builds stronger academic skills, encourages lifelong civic commitment, and improves workplace and personal development skills among youth. Educators lead …

Learning To Look Through The Eyes Of Our Students: Action Research As A Tool Of Inquiry, Joanne Arhar, Gayle A. Buck
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
The story we are about to tell occurred when Gayle was a middle school science teacher and graduate student in Joanne’s seminar on the study of teaching. Gayle was trying to make sense of her science students’ indifference toward the environment, an attitude that concerned her as an environmentalist. She turned her inquiry into an action research project that sought to answer the question, ‘What are the assumptions that my middle school students have about their relationship with the environment?’ Joanne was mentoring Gayle in her action research study, and at the same time exploring Gayle’s perspective as an action …

Overview of Home-School Partnerships “... parents take their child home after professionals complete their services and parents continue providing the care for the larger portion of the child’s waking hours... No matter how skilled professionals are, or how loving parents are, each cannot achieve alone what the two parties, working hand-in-hand, can accomplish together” (Peterson & Cooper, 1989; pp. 229, 208).

Designing And Tailoring School/University Partnerships: A Straightjacket, Security Blanket, Or Just A Loose Coat?, Dannelle D. Stevens, Robert B. Everhart
Education Faculty Publications and Presentations
Formalized partnerships between colleges or universities and public schools have gained in popularity even though their impact remains uncertain. Such partnerships, existing under a variety of terms (the most common of which is Professional Development Schools [PDS}), are meant to bring together the resources and the expertise of the university and those of one or more public schools. PDSs typically center on three fundamental domains of activity: the preparation of new educational professionals, the continuing professional development of current staff, and the collaborative field-based research on issues of common interest.
This paper focuses on the process by which such partnerships …
Using Web Pages To Teach Mathematical Modeling: Some Ideas And Suggestions, Elliott Ostler, Neal Grandgenett
Using Web Pages To Teach Mathematical Modeling: Some Ideas And Suggestions, Elliott Ostler, Neal Grandgenett
Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Mathematical modeling can perhaps be best defined as “the process of scientific inquiry” for mathematics. This is obviously a comfortable mode for teachers of science, but is rarely seen in the mathematics classrooms of today. This paper explores the possibilities of using interactive web pages to help facilitate an understanding of practical applications based mathematics. Because the scientific process is emphasized as the general operating framework, situations where students can hypothesize and experiment, and create data tables are most valuable. Special emphasis is placed on the fact that students and teachers both need to re-conceptualize effective mathematics instruction in order …

Mathematical Modeling Within A Technology Based Learning Environment: Some Principles For Adaptive Instruction, Neal Grandgenett, Elliott Ostler, Arthur I. Zygielbaum, Scott Henninger, Char Hazzard
Teacher Education Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
This paper describes a set of research based instructional plans being developed by a multidisciplinary team of researchers at the University of Nebraska within a National Science Foundation Proof-of-Concept Grant. The project is seeking to establish a prototype effort for teaching mathematical modeling within a technology based learning environment, which includes components of adaptive instruction for the student. Seven curriculum based design principles for the adaptive instruction that are being followed in the development of the project are described in the paper as they relate to research on effective mathematics instruction, and in particular the enhancement of mathematical modeling activities.

In 1978, in Elkhart County Indiana, three teenage girls died following an "accident" in which their Ford Pinto was struck from behind and burst into flames. Two years later, in what has been described as a landmark case (Maakestad, 1987; Clinard, 1990; Frank and Lynch, 1992; Hills, 1987), a trial began in which the Ford Motor Company, as a result of this incident, found itself facing three charges of reckless homicide (State of Indiana v. Ford Motor Company, hereafter referred to as the Pinto Case). While this was not the first time an automobile manufacturer was faced with a potentially …

This paper investigates the contrast between quantificational and referential properties of the English indefinite determiner during the course of first language acquisition. · Various syntactic, semantic and pragmatic knowledge related to indefinites has previously been probed in the acquisition literature. (See Brown 1973, Maratsos 1976, Warden 1976, Emslie and Stevenson 1980, Zehler and Brewer 1982, Pine and Martindale 1986, Valian 1986, Gerken, Landau and Remez 1990, Philip 1995, Bohnacker 1997, and Burns and Soja 1997, among others.) However, to date, the contrast between referential-type and quantificational/variable-type interpretations of indefinites has not been extensively studied in first language acquisition. In this …

Regularity Effects In Word Naming: What Are They?, Michael J. Cortese, Greg B. Simpson
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
In a word-naming experiment, word-body consistency was crossed with grapheme-to-phoneme regularity to test predictions of current models of word recognition. In the latency and error data, a clear effect of consistency was observed, with the influence of regularity somewhat weaker. In addition, simulation data from three contemporary models of word recognition were obtained for the stimuli used in the experiment in order to compare the models’ latencies with those of humans. The simulations showed that the human latency data are most consistent with the parallel-distributed-processing model of Plaut, McClelland, Seidenberg, and Patterson (1996), less so with the dual-process model (Zorzi, …
