Undergraduates, The Right Questions, And Cayley Produce Results, Gary J. Sherman

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

During the summers of 1989, 1990, and 1991, eighteen undergraduates participated in a National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates program at Rose-Hulman for which the author was the principal investigator. This paper provides some examples of the mathematics discovered during these three summers and discusses the philosophy, environment and process which made these discoveries possible.

Oil In Bowling Green: A Lost Chapter In Wku's History, Jonathan Jeffrey

Bowling Green became the center of a five-county oil boom in the late-1910s. Two men working on construction of Western Kentucky University’s Potter Hall were determined to not be left out of the action. Architect William J. Bray and contractor Walter Brashear formed a syndicate to lease local land for oil exploration. In August 1920, WKU’s Board of Regents granted their company, The Great Arch Oil Company, exclusive rights to drill on the school’s farm. Study On Observational Systems: A Review Of Meteorological And Oceanographic Education In Observational Techniques And The Relationship To National Facilities And Needs, Robert Serafin, Brian Heikes, Douglas Sargeant, William Smith, Eugene Takle, Roger Wakimoto

Geological and Atmospheric Sciences Publications

Meteorological and oceanographic education in observational techniques and the relationship to national facilities' needs are reviewed. The significance of measurement science and its relationship to national capabilities are examined. Opportunities for the enhancement of national capabilities related to the application of measurement science to meteorology and oceanography are identified and recommendations for action are presented.
