Mucp 183-983: Applied Music Composition--A Course Benchmark Portfolio, Gregory Simon Jan 2018

Mucp 183-983: Applied Music Composition--A Course Benchmark Portfolio, Gregory Simon

UNL Faculty Course Portfolios

MUCP 183-983, Applied Music Composition, is the core of the music composition course curriculum for students at all levels, from freshman to doctoral candidate. Like all applied lesson environments, it is a one-on-one, individualized study that principally involves the instructor giving students feedback on their musical works-in-progress. This time-honored paradigm for teaching composition has produced brilliant artists, but is rife with pitfalls and traps that can tarnish a student’s growth: composition pedagogues can coerce students into writing music like their teachers, or can prescribe a curriculum that makes composition accessible only to students who have already played classical music for …

The Patient As Mentor: Transformative Experience In An Occupational Therapy Course, Meagan Troop, Anne O'Riordan Nov 2017

The Patient As Mentor: Transformative Experience In An Occupational Therapy Course, Meagan Troop, Anne O'Riordan

Publications and Scholarship

“The Lived Experience of Disability” course matches first year occupational therapy students with mentors, individuals with health challenges, for a series of community visits. This learning relationship facilitates students’ understanding of disability and client-centred practice. Mentors share expertise of their lived experience; students consider personal attitudes, assumptions and knowledge of disability and their future client-therapist relationships. Findings of a qualitative research study using a case study approach reveal that students engaged in interactive course components that comprised reflective practice, mentor visits, and critical involvement in a community of practice. These experiential and collaborative interactions provided pedagogical conditions for building relational …

Stand At Ease, Then Forward, March!, Janice E. Hawkins Jan 2017

Stand At Ease, Then Forward, March!, Janice E. Hawkins

Nursing Faculty Publications

(First paragraph) I enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1985. After reporting for basic training, I learned to execute military formation maneuvering commands. Military formations help organize ceremonial parades, gain tactical advantage, and create discipline. It occurs to me that the same elements that contribute to effective functioning of a military unit- ceremony, tactical planning, and discipline- also contribute to achieving one's goals after completing graduate school.

University Rankings: Evidence And A Conceptual Framework, Jonathan G.S. Koppell, Jacob Fowles, H. George Frederickson Sep 2016

University Rankings: Evidence And A Conceptual Framework, Jonathan G.S. Koppell, Jacob Fowles, H. George Frederickson

Publications from President Jonathan G.S. Koppell

University ranking has high public visibility, the ranking business has flourished, and institutions of higher education have not been able to ignore it. This study of university ranking presents general considerations of ranking and institutional responses to it, particularly considering reactions to ranking, ranking as a self-fulfilling prophecy, and ranking as a means of transforming qualities into quantities. The authors present a conceptual framework of university ranking based on three propositions and carry out a descriptive statistical analysis of U.S. and international ranking data to evaluate those propositions. The first proposition of university ranking is that ranking systems are demarcated …

Online “Maker” Modules To Support Production Pedagogies In Education, Janette Hughes, Lauren Fridman, Laura Morrison Jan 2016

Online “Maker” Modules To Support Production Pedagogies In Education, Janette Hughes, Lauren Fridman, Laura Morrison

Teaching and Learning in a Digital Context

Our research study examines the use of online maker modules (developed by our research team) on the learning process for, and professional development of, graduate M.Ed. and M.A. students in a faculty of education in Ontario, Canada. The research draws on the practice of critical making with both digital and real-world artefacts as a vehicle for collaborative knowledge- sharing and generation, deep learning and meaningful engagement with one’s local and global communities. The students engaged in all five online maker modules as part of a graduate-level course and this paper offers insight into the experiences of two of these students …

The Embedded Librarian As Graduate Coach, Pamela Dennis Jan 2016

The Embedded Librarian As Graduate Coach, Pamela Dennis

Dover Library Faculty Professional Development Activities

In a time when more classes are being offered online and in-person reference desk questions are dwindling, it is even more crucial that librarians to seek out students where they are. One way of doing that is by befriending teaching faculty in discipline areas. Whether at the freshman or doctoral level, literature indicates that students prefer one-on-one interaction with librarians. But librarians undersell themselves and find themselves in a world of anonymity. It’s hard to be valued when you are invisible. By collaborating with the faculty, the librarian has the opportunity of embedding in online classes, co-instructing, receiving invitations to …

Examining New Vistas In Leadership Learning With Technology, Lorayne Robertson, Jill Harvey, Janani Srikantha, Damali Thomas, Kavita Anand Jan 2016

Examining New Vistas In Leadership Learning With Technology, Lorayne Robertson, Jill Harvey, Janani Srikantha, Damali Thomas, Kavita Anand

Internationalization, Globalization and Exchange in Higher Education

Technology-enabled learning can open new vistas in higher education. Moving a course online, however, does not guarantee that students will be more engaged, nor that they will think more critically, or understand more deeply. Online learning does create new digital learning spaces where students can make connections without the constraints of physical co-location. This case study outlines the experiences of a small group of students in the same graduate course who chose an opportunity to work in an authentic, cross-continental context within a global, professional learning community. The students were able to “see” leadership theory in practice through the investigation …

Modelling Graduate Skill Transfer From University To The Workplace, Denise Jackson Jan 2016

Modelling Graduate Skill Transfer From University To The Workplace, Denise Jackson

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

This study explores skill transfer in graduates as they transition from university to the workplace. Graduate employability continues to dominate higher education agendas yet the transfer of acquired skills is often assumed. The study is prompted by documented concern with graduate performance in certain employability skills, and prevalent skill gaps across developed economies. Using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modelling (SEM), it models skill transfer in 674 business graduates from 39 different Australian universities. Findings support extant literature with the three areas of learner, learning programme and workplace characteristics influencing transfer. The model highlights the need for a …
