During 2004-2005, the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Iowa State University in collaboration with educational colleagues in the Research Institute for Studies in Education piloted a new curricula model to improve student learning through vertical integration of educational activities using new program structures. We offered an experimental course sequence during Fall 2004 and Spring 2005, defined as a “learning stream.” A learning stream is a basic element of a novel program structure designed specifically to vertically integrate subject matter across courses. Gallini (1989) argues that, “the ability to combine a collection of problems into a meaningful representation, or schema facilitates learning” (p. 244). More specifically, Chan (1990) reports, “that the ability of organizing and applying schemata determines a designer’s ability” (p. 78). The purpose of this study was to measure the impact and effectiveness of a conceptual advanced organizer, a database/analysis card model, in the interior design studio. Student admissions, placement rates and starting salaries for graduates of animal and dairy science remained strong in 2004. Curricula have been revitalized by the creation of new sophomore courses in animal production and the refocus of senior coursework to enhance emphasis on enterprise management. New faculty members joining the teaching program and planning for both a new multi-purpose animal pavilion and a dairy farm near campus have heightened the enthusiasm about the future of animal science education for students and faculty.

Residence hall occupancy is of concern to housing administrators because higher occupancy leads to financial stability. While many areas are housing more students, some regions such as the Midwest are experiencing enrollment declines primarily due to a decline in high-school graduates and a struggling economy (Meline, 2003). In the Midwest there are daily newspaper reports of declining enrollment, budget cuts, reduction in financial resources, and increased competition for government funding and private support. When occupancy is low, it is especially desirable for housing administrators to learn more about what motivates students in their choice of housing.

Perceptions of student satisfaction living in special Fresh Start residence halls were collected (N = 1,160, 40% female, 11% minority, 72% freshmen). Satisfaction was influenced by out-of-state residency, satisfaction with two residence staff positions, and Fresh Start policies, as well as house comfort interaction factors and living in a suite or a renovated residence hall.

This technical report summarizes the results of a study in which we examined the technical adequacy of two potential measures for algebra progress monitoring. Eighty-seven students (11 of whom were receiving special education services) completed two forms of a Translations measure and two forms of a Content Analysis-Multiple Choice measure during each of two data collection sessions. In addition, we gathered data on criterion variables including grades, overall grade point average, teacher ratings of student proficiency, and scores on districtadministered standardized tests, as well as a measure of algebra aptitude. This technical report summarizes the results of a study in which we examined the technical adequacy of four revised measures for algebra progress monitoring. The measures investigated included a Basic Skills probe, an Algebra Foundations probe, a Translations probe, and a Content Analysis-Multiple Choice probe. Revisions to the measures included the addition of a sample page prior to the initial administration of each type of probe and changes to the design templates used to create the Content Analysis-Multiple Choice measure.
