School Committee Composition: Exploring The Role Of Parental And Female Representation In India, Panchali Guha Feb 2023

School Committee Composition: Exploring The Role Of Parental And Female Representation In India, Panchali Guha

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Motivation: The adoption of school-based management (SBM) reforms has led to the formation of local-level school committees in many low- and middle-income countries. These committees are usually created with the stated aim of giving parents or local community members a greater say in school management. Various studies have, however, highlighted difficulties with parental and female participation, casting doubt on the extent to which greater community representation improves school management. Purpose: The article examines empirically whether greater parental and female representation in Indian school management committees (SMCs) is associated with school improvement as measured by increases in the school-level provision of …

This paper reports experiences made at an Asian university in developing a social media platform based on Twitter in the context of a final year capstone project where information systems management students get an opportunity to solve ‘a real-world problem for a real client’. In this case study, the challenge was provided by a faculty member’s request for an interactive social media application which engages less outspoken students in class via a social medium they are familiar with: Twitter. We reconstruct the project’s evolution; describe the main features of the application called ‘TweetBoard’ and share lessons learned in developing a …

Simulations For Crisis Communication: The Use Of Social Media, Siyoung Chung

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Simulations have been widely used in crisis and emergency communication for practitioners but have not reached classrooms in higher education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects that simulations using social media have on learning of crisis communication among college students. To explore the effects, a real-time crisis simulation activity using social media are created for 132 undergraduate students enrolled at a business school. Both quantitative and qualitative data collected from pre- and post-simulation surveys are used to investigate the benefits of simulations on learning and identify the challenges the participants experienced.

The Complex Nature Of Bilinguals' Language Usage Modulates Task-Switching Outcomes, Hwajin Yang, Andree Hartanto, Sujin Yang Apr 2016

The Complex Nature Of Bilinguals' Language Usage Modulates Task-Switching Outcomes, Hwajin Yang, Andree Hartanto, Sujin Yang

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In view of inconsistent findings regarding bilingual advantages in executive functions (EF), we reviewed the literature to determine whether bilinguals' different language usage causes measureable changes in the shifting aspects of EF. By drawing on the theoretical framework of the adaptive control hypothesis-which postulates a critical link between bilinguals' varying demands on language control and adaptive cognitive control (Green and Abutalebi, 2013), we examined three factors that characterize bilinguals' language-switching experience: (a) the interactional context of conversational exchanges, (b) frequency of language switching, and (c) typology of code-switching. We also examined whether methodological variations in previous task-switching studies modulate task-specific …

Encouraging The Rise Of Fan Publics: Bridging Strategy To Understand Fan Publics’ Positive Communicative Actions, Arunima Krishna, Soojin Kim

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The identification and engagement of supportive publics or fan publics to being a part of an organization’s communication efforts and activities has very recently emerged as a key agenda among public relations scholars and practitioners. While discussions on fandom and fan activism can be found extensively in the social sciences (e.g., Lee, 2011; Parry, Jones & Wann, 2014; Millward & Poulton, 2014), public relations as a field is yet to address fans as a public of interest. A few efforts have been made to build the connections between relationship management research (e.g., Bruning, Dials, & Shirka, 2008), public relations, and …

Cognitive And Social Factors Affecting The Use Of Wikipedia And Information Seeking, Siyoung Chung Nov 2012

Cognitive And Social Factors Affecting The Use Of Wikipedia And Information Seeking, Siyoung Chung

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, is the preferred choice among resources used by college students to meet their research needs. However, Wikipedia has been criticized for its low information quality, lack of accountability, inconsistency, and vulnerability to vandalism. Despite the warnings and concerns voiced by academia, online learning tools such as Wikipedia will continue their rise as major learning resource in today's classroom. Using a sample of 184 college students, the study proposed theoretical models to test the effects of internal beliefs, motivations, and social influences on Wikipedia use and information-seeking, and further empirically tested those models. The findings of …

Despite the fact that both learning styles and cross-cultural differences have been important research topics for decades, surprisingly little work has been done on comparisons of learning behaviour across cultures and its impact for teachers working in culturally mixed settings. This chapter is based on a research project funded by the European Union seeking to provide fresh knowledge on cross-national differences in attitudes towards learning of students from selected countries. It reports on the results from Austria, Germany, Singapore and Thailand and outlines some of the implications for teaching in higher education.

In 2005, the authors of this essay led the development and launch of SMU's (Singapore Management University) first e-learning package on 'Knowledge Management'. This package has been integrated into the overall teaching strategy, thereby fulfilling the University's mission to be "committed to an interactive, participative and technologically-enabled learning experience"

Since its inception in 2000, SMU's educational and administrative practices are modelled after American institutions, in particular the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. To support SMU's unique pedagogy, wireless technology for mobile computing is a central feature at SMU.

Against this background, the paper presents a self-critical and reflective …
